When I read Kawai James's advice to a new CN34 owner for upgrading to the latest operating version, I decided to check my CN34 out and saw that my system was outdated. After I followed the upgrade instructions, I was surprised to see that my CN34 wouldn't turn off, no matter what I tried. But after a few minutes, it suddenly powered off on its own.

When I restarted it, the piano wouldn't work! There was no sound whatever, no matter what I tried. I decided to write a post here to see what I might do, but after ten minutes of writing, I decided one last time to power up the CN34 and see if it might have fixed itself. Indeed it did. And now everything works perfectly.

I don't know if I didn't wait long enough for the new settings to take effect, or if something might have just tripped up. But I thought I'd write this post, just in case someone else is upgrading a Kawai DP and experiences similar problems.

By the way, placebo drugs work wonderfully on me, and this may be one such fix, but it seems to me that my CN34 sounds quite a bit better now that it's been upgraded. If I'm delusional, though, please don't clue me in.

Very strange. I've never heard of anything like that before.

Not to worry - the main thing is that the instrument continues to work and play well. wink

Cheers,
James

Sounds like you dodged a bullet. In general, anytime you're upgrading firmware-like for anything, it's imperative that you perform the upgrade exactly as instructed, and even then the process can be flaky and take some time.

Sounds like you just hit a bit of a random glitch that the software needed some time to sort itself out. I'm glad that it did.

Here here. This was especially true back when firmware upgrades happened through MIDI. I had problems with that myself (my USB-MIDI cable was too long or something). Now that they are typically done through the USB-To-Device they are much more reliable.

Sometimes it does take a reboot or two (or even a factory reset) to make updated firmware work right, though, it seems. Glad it worked out for you!

I would be suspicious about this. Are you in the US? Perhaps the NSA have compromised your instrument, and are gathering evidence about the decadent and dangerous music you are going to promote. You can continue to play it, but not plugged in, so silently of course.

Got a question about how to do the update. I downloaded the latest software version update for CN34 but it is compressed in a zipped file, do I copy just the compressed .sys file to the flash drive? Or do I extract the zipped file and copy the uncompressed .sys file to the flash drive? Directions just say Copy the CN34_040.SYS update file to the root folder of a USB memory device. Please advise, I don't want to make a mistake and mess something up.

Hello magflo,

Yes, the ZIP file should be extracted to a temporary location first (e.g. to the computer desktop), then the .SYS file should be copied to the root (i.e. not a folder/sub-folder) of the USB device.

I can appreciate your caution. The CN34 (and other USB-to-Device equipped Kawai DPs) will not update unless the correct .SYS file is found. I believe a backup of the existing firmware is also retained, so even if something goes wrong during the update process, the instrument should still power-on as normal.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
James

ok, just did it, displaying the correct boot end message, removed the flash drive per instructions and now it won't power off, so I'm having the same issue as previous poster, going to give it some time before going back to try to power off again, any advice?

Ah, please press and hold the power switch for a few seconds in order to turn the instrument off. This is an intended safety measure to prevent accidentally turning off the instrument during an update.

Previous models used a two-state (ON and OFF) power switch, however this was changed to a single-state (i.e. latch-less) power switch in order to conform with power management regulations.

I will look into revising the software update instructions to explain this point in the near future.

Kind regards,
James

No problem, happy to help.

My apologies that the update procedure was not explained more clearly.

Cheers,
James

Very likely so... we all had better buy an acoustic piano now and throw away our digitals lest we are tracked and snooped upon.

Ohh, I wouldn't worry about that. We almost certainly already are. Ample scope for chip implants - even in an acoustic piano. They could be operated by string vibration dynamos. Or pedal heat.

Personally, I'm delighted they are taking such an interest in our music making. It might do them some good......who ever THEY are.
