I teach near Los Angeles, California. I'm considering joining the NGPT or other similar organization, and I have some questions about that. I'm particularly interested in hearing from teachers who work in and around Los Angeles.

1. I've seen the Guild mentioned in the same context as something called CM. What is CM? Is it something to be considered in addition to Guild, or as a substitute?

2. Are there any other organizations I should consider joining either in addition to, or as an alternative to Guild?

3. I'm aware of Guild auditions, but don't know much about them, other than students play in front of adjudicators, are given scores, and can earn prizes.

4. Where would I find information on competitions or masterclasses that my students could participate in?

CM refers to the Certificate of Merit program associated with the Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC). You can read more here: http://www.mtac.org/programs/performance/certificate-of-merit/

The MTNA, MTAC, and American College of Musicians / National Guild of Piano Teachers (not necessarily in that order) seem to be the three biggest organizations to California teachers as far as I'm aware.

If you're teaching piano in California, I'd suggest joining the Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC). This is the organization which has Certificate Of Merit.
