Serial number is 20050.

Can anybody tell me what year this was made?

Hi Matt,

Are you sure about the serial number? Only five digits is rather unusual and only occasionally found on instruments from near the end of the nineteenth century.

Photos, inside and out, would help.

Cable Piano, of Chicago, built a Kingsbury line of grands which was later taken over by Aeolian. Being an upright causes a bit of confusion. However, there were so many builders using the same name, that it can get difficult to pin-point them. Any additional info you could supply would be very helpful.

Kingsbury beer was brewed by a company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin from ..... (Oops, wrong forum!)

Wow !

I got this thing basically for transportation cost off of Craigslist. Every key plays, the sound board looks excellent, and the tuning pins don't look like they've been driven in.

The key tops are in terrible shape.

Just an update on my learning project.

- took it apart and cleaned under the keys. I found a pencil that was holding up the keys and making the action not work right.

- played with the tuning hammer. One string broke. They seem rusty.

- I took off all the chipped/yellowed ivories(it also had a bunch of missing ivories). I plan to re-do it with Vagias.

- I found a piano tech willing to teach me and help me with the project. Right now, I'm working on re-stringing an upright with him.

- The soundboard does have several cracks in it.

If you are learning and having fun at the same time, that is fantastic.

One thing I've learned about working on old pianos is that it can be very time consuming. When (and if) I retire, I hope to do more tinkering on old pianos... for the moment, I think I like the ones that don't need working on... just play it! smile
