I'm at an old hotel and they have an old pump organ. It's the kind you pump with your feet.

It's quite a challenge to play, and so far I've had the best luck pumping my feet double time. Anyone have any experience on one of these and have any tips for me on how to play it?

Thanks

Depends what condition it's in! smile Steady and non-rhythmical should work, that is, you don't have to pump in time with what you're playing, and generally it's best not to, in my experience (which admittedly was some decades ago). Too quick and you'll wear yourself out.

This brings back nightmares from my youth when my Grandmother 'made' me play hymns on hers for hours. I hated it and still do.

Anyway, a big issue is the condition of the bellows, hers was leaky and I had to pump my heart out to play it.

I've played others that were in better condition and had the best result just pumping smoothly and steadily just to keep the air flowing nicely.

You don't have to pump in any kind of rhythm with what you're playing unless it's easier to synchronize that way.

Have fun, I don't envy you.

These forums won't let you say that, they'll turn it into "heck." grin

I watched an online video on how to play one of these reed organs, and it made me realize that this one has a major leak somewhere, because I had to pump the heck out of it to get it to play. Fun experience though.

I had my first playing lessons on the pump organ. In fact I kept on with it for 5 years. It requires a technique a bit different from the piano. The bottom line is, however: DON'T STOP PUMPING!!!
