music has been one of my strongest tools to help me through hard times. have you ever heard that song/piece that has changed your life? what is it about music that helps so much? do you think it makes us stronger? do you think it brings us closer together?

I have been wondering lately about the importance of music on us, and these are my thoughts thus far:
art: the physical manifestation of inner emotion; our way of taking those indescribable feelings within and through a physical medium, expressing them to the world.
so i've been thinking, why is it, with something as ambiguous as art, why do we all feel these same feelings when we might not truly know the story behind it? my guess is that regardless of the cause, we all feel the same emotions i.e bob's cat died but bob's cat was his greatest and oldest friend so even if i didn't care too much about a late cat i can definitely sympathise with the loss of a good friend (fortunately this hasn't happened yet so yay for my good friends and Bob's cat).
so if we all feel the same sadness, the same happiness, the same hope for the future, is that why music can help us all?
because music is essentially a free emotional-vent-card for a club we are all a member of.
sorry for the longwinded post, but i'm tired and felt like writing it.
I'm sure i've left a lot out of this post and it makes absolutely no sense but hey i'm sure you get the jist. feel free to tell me i'm wrong or add your own ideas and opinions. smile

Well, I can remember two pieces of music that shaped my life - and coincidentally, both were 'songs'.

The most memorable one was when I watched a lovely short TV film about an old man (played to perfection by the late Denholm Elliott) and a little boy staying with him, who found a wind-up gramophone and a 78rpm record to play on it. It was Schubert's Du bist die Ruh, which I'd never heard - in fact, it was probably the first time I'd heard a Schubert song. I hurriedly wrote down the details of the song and the singer as the end credits rolled, but it was to be a few decades later before I found that recording issued on CD. There was something about the story line (which, alas, I can't remember) and the beautiful song on the scratchy 78 that combined to make me fall in love with art song (as opposed to pop songs, which had hitherto been my staple diet), and restore my spirits, which was then at a low ebb, because I was spending the school half-term alone in a foreign country for the first time at the age of 15. This is the song, sung (incomparably) by that singer I heard: http://youtu.be/1nZkFx9d5J4

The other 'song' was on the LP of Mozart arias which I mentioned on another thread, my first experience of any operatic music (indeed, any vocal classical music), which taught me how to phrase a song-like melody on the piano, and how operatic Mozart's style is. And how life-enhancing such music is...

I'm sure everyone can relate his/her own life-changing song/piece. In my case, several decades ago, it was a sonata heard on an old tape recorder that's influenced my love for classical music and to focus more and more on classical piano instead of other music styles.

About healing music, I believe it's true as well. I remember songs/pieces to help me out in tough times. I also believe music can be distracting/annoying (for example, when one doesn't like a certain a song/piece) or have a very strong influence on the listener.

There's one interesting text about this from Leon Tolstoi's novella about the Kreutzer sonata. I was impressed when I read it years ago, because it explains what I believe happens (at least to me) when certain masterworks are played (correctly). Then "music is powerful enough to change one's internal state to a foreign one", etc. Of course, everyone can be different - maybe this happens more easily when you like a particular music style, and/or if you are also a musician, etc.
