I have been given a homework assignment for this week (from piano teacher) to do an analysis of a piece I'm learning (Chopin Prelude 28/20) and I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of good, free, theory resources that can help me analyze the piece? I'm fortunate that it's a chordal piece, but theory is a brave new world, sadly.

Just write in all the chord names, and mark interesting elements of voice leading.

Have you done this before, or is it the first time you are doing it?

Florentin, I've never done this before, so had trouble figuring out where to start.

Start with the key signature, and it may start and end in that key, so there are a couple of chords you can mark. Then look for a cadence at the end, say going from V to I. Then just fill in the stuff in the middle. Arrange the notes sounding simultaneously in ascending thirds, ignoring the octave, to help recognize the chords.
