An interview with the great pianist Harold Danko - professor of jazz piano at Eastman - is on my blog.

http://www.polishookstudio.com/2013/10/online-jazz-piano-harold-danko-interview.html

The interview includes columns Harold's wrote for Keyboard Magazine and links to videos of his performances and a lot more ... how he teaches, what he teaches, who his students are, how he learned to play jazz, who he played with in NYC and around the world, etc.

Hi Mark
Thank you Mark for taking the time to share Harold Danko's insights. In particular, these three points stood out for me:
1. Playing vs practice. Play what flows from inside you. Practice is about outside influences.
2. Use classical pieces to build technique.
3. Improvisation is a never-ending process.

In his solo at 7:05 on My Funny Valentine (1), I loved his groove (I think Chet did too) and his relaxed technique.
In Martina, I loved his tone and his restrained dynamics.

He mentioned his contemporary Larry Schneider; I first heard Larry on his wonderful Comrade Conrad solo.

Hi Cus, I thought playing vs. practice, the way he said it, was reeeaaallly interesting! Am glad to share it (and very happy he took the time to speak about all that stuff)

I've always liked his playing with Chet Baker, so it was interesting to read his thoughts about playing within the context of the tune, rather than plugging in what you've been practicing.

Ditto on his comment about using short classical pieces for technique. Plus "you don't learn to improvise, you improvise to learn" which I took to mean you learn to improvise by doing it.

Ken, I agree with you - really interesting to hear how he works within the tune (and how he describes that process). That last line - it's a gem, I think, because it's so open

.. And thanks for taking the time to read the interview ...
