Well done PPP I reckon you will excell in whatever your chosen path is, is there any chance you could explain to me ( or anyone else who isn't sure) what the job entails? I have to admit to not understanding and not knowing the field. WOW !! excellent.

Hmmm....no answer from PPP. I think he'd like to tell us, but then, he'd have to kill us.
And he'd have to spend the rest of his life just trying to FIND us!

I love this Rach piece, hope it hasn't been posted already.

Thanks everyone for the kind regards. The term "compartive cognition" is really just a shorter way of saying the psychological and neuropsychological study of varying species (humans included). And the use of the term "cognition" in the title is really a misnomer since most of the theoretical basis for everything done in this field nowadays boils down to associative mechanisms which can be understood at the level of neuro-physical structures which are influenced by environmental, genetic, and evolutionary factors. So the lab will research things like various kinds of associative learning in humans and animals, category formation, navigation, social learning, animal communication, animal intelligence, animal problem solving, and a host of other diverse areas. My job is simply to maintain and run the experiments on a daily basis and keep the lab in working order. The great thing about this job is not so much that it is full time employment (which is a nice change), but that it will provide me with a wealth of experience when I go to apply for graduate studies next fall.

Here is a few examples of some comparative cognition research

Good evening all!

This Friday night I’d like to post about Shostakovich’s ballet music. The great composer wrote four fantastic ballet suites, where we can find an exuberant melodic ability with fascinating musical developments. Although this kind of music could be considered like a lighter music compared to other works, I think these suites are still the proper music from a genius.

Like a little example, here’s the first movement of the fourth suite. I hope you like it.

Recaredo, the Shostakovich blew me away. All I'd heard of his was Symphony no. 9 (not exactly gripping stuff).

I must investigate further.

It makes this choice feel a bit paltry but I'm sticking it in anyway. I found myself singing it at work today. It wasn't on in the car so I don't know what brought it on. I used to play it in the band in the mid seventies. Don't know when I last heard it.

Nice posts, PPP.

Apparently Google's 'Pigeon Rank' April fool joke some years ago was inspired by Skinner.

PPP, thank you for describing your field. I pulled out the dictionary to get through it — so glad you provided the examples!

It's a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning here. I hope all of you who have the day off enjoy it!

A sunny day here, for now.

Here's Sister Sledge and Lost In Music on Top of the Pops, back in the day:

Right, back to the sanding and painting (I'm on to the back hall now, only five Victorian doors and door-frames to go...) with all this left-over paint from the office/music room - accompanied by the best of Sister Sledge and Chic...

Dear me...

someone please give me at least 24 hours advance warning prior to any posting of THE VILLAGE PEOPLE !!!
Actually, that may not be allowed on this thread, unsure.

laugh. My dear Piano Joy, I'm flattered! However, I can't take credit for Eglantine's eclectic music tastes. I truly appreciate them, however.

Also, consider that it's around 2pm in London. Sister Sledge is probably just the kind of pick me up Eglantine might need as she's repainting those 5 Victorian doors and door frames.

It's about 8am here in Minneapolis. I normally wouldn't start my morning with such exuberant dance music. However, I'll make an exception today to help Eglantine dance right through the painting project.

Here is Patti LaBelle back in the day with Lady Marmelade.

(Piano Joy, now you know how Rossy feels when I post my jazz music) laugh

Here's Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes' Don't Leave Me This Way:

Oh, how I love Philadelphia soul!

Piano Joy, I have no need to borrow Griffin's... I have umpteen million of my own! I think we are fine here with Village People... and with Henri Dutilleux. There is a time and a place for many things.

Griffin, I'd forgotten how wonderful the Patti Labelle costumes were! Really space age!

I'm currently working wonders with an old toothbrush and soft soap on a back outside door with stubborn old mildew. Please let me know if there's a better approach...

Right, here's Cerrone, with Supernature. The video's quite fun too, with pseudo-medics in a desert and a Rolls Royce (or is it a Bentley? Rossy, what do you reckon?).

What Piano Joy sez!

Here are the lyrics of Supernature. It's almost like the neo-cons vs. the environmentalists vs. ... Serious stuff! In a disco song! In 1977!

-------------

Once upon a time science opened up the door
We would feed the hungry fields till they couldn't eat no more
But the potions that we made touched the creatures down below, oh
And they grew up in the way that we'd never seen before

Supernature, supernature
Supernature, supernature
Supernature, supernature
Supernature, supernature

They were angry with the man 'cause he changed their way of life
And they take their sweet revenge, as they trample through the night
For a hundred miles or more you can hear the people cry
But there's nothin' you can do even God is on their side

Supernature, supernature
Supernature, supernature
Supernature, supernature
Supernature, supernature

How can I explain, things are different today
Darkness all around and nobody makes a sound
Such a sad affair, no one seems to care

Supernature, better watch out
Look at you now, better watch out
Look at you now, supernature

Better watch out, there's no way to stop it now
You can't escape, it's too late
Look what you've done, there's no place that you can run
The monster's made, we must pay

Supernature, you better watch out
Supernature, look at you now
Supernature, you better watch out
Supernature, look at you now

Better watch out, there's no way to stop it now
You can't escape, it's too late
(Supernature)
Look what you've done, there's no place that you can run
The monster's made, we must pay

Maybe nature has a plan to control the ways of man
He must start from scratch again many battles he must win
Till he earns his place on earth like the other creatures do
Will there be a happy end, now that all depends on you

Supernature, supernature
Supernature, supernature
Supernature

It's a Rolls Royce, Eglantine. The Spirit of Ecstasy is quite distinct. Bentleys use a winged B.

Speaking of back doors (amid bouts of laughter) and Bentleys...
