Today marks the 60th year anniversary of the horrible plane crash that robbed us of William Kapell. Here is the only video footage which exists:

Any observations on the wrist movements that Kapell uses, often while holding a note or notes? Surely not an advocate of the "quiet wrist," I would say.

Koji: If remember correctly you wrote a paper(thesis?) on Kapell. Can you tell us a little about what was in this?

Could that announcer be a youngish Alistair Cooke?

I honestly thought he meant something like that. Of course it seemed nearly impossible, but that's what the wording seemed to mean.

And that's not the only misunderstanding I had. From the title, I thought this was about Hurricane Sandy.

I found it interesting how he distributes the opening of the Scarlatti between the hands -- i.e. not playing the "answer" phrase with the left hand, but using the L.H. to cross over upwards for the mordents. It's similar to how I do it, and I've always wondered if some might consider it "cheating."

It's also very interesting how he adds ornaments and even changes registrations from the score.

I haven't yet gotten up to where the announcer interrupts him. I can 'hardly' wait.

Koji: Thanks so much for posting this. I didn't know there was any video of him.

A couple of days ago was the anniversary of the flight that killed Ginette Neveu. September 1 was the 60th anniversary of the flight that killed Jacques Thibaud.

Speaking of Alistair Cooke, here is Alistair Cooke's tribute to William Kapell in his radio program Letter from America, broadcast the week after the crash, Nov. 5, 1953:
