I'm confused because the G note in the treble clef looks like a quarter and an eighth note at the same time.

Could someone please explain what this means and how to play it?

Two voices, one with up stems and one with down stems, use the same note.

Although you will hold it for the full quarter note value, you will try to shape the phrase as part of the melody (8th note). If you are feeling really good, you should also phrase the second F (quarter note) inner voice with that same G.

It's at points like this that my head explodes. Luckily you can usually get away with just making it sound like part of the melody without any real loss - but the pros, they will voice it 100%!
