A friend gave me her old piano. There is one sticky key. Any tips on how to unstick it? We're looking now for trapped items in the keys but haven't found anything yet. The inside looks like it's in really good shape. Other than the one key, it's a very nice piano. There is resistance when you press down. Thank you!

Call a technician to sort out that key, tune the piano, and tell you if anything else needs doing.

Calling a piano technician is a good idea...

Aside from that, you might try wiggling the key from side to side and manually working it up and down. There could be several things that could cause it to stick; some easy to fix and others not so easy.

I'm planning on doing that, but in the meantime, I play a lot and my old piano is going tomorrow, and many of the songs I play are in the key of D (which is the sticky note) because I accompany my violinist daughters. The sticky D is really throwing me off.

Rickster I didn't see your response until I responded to Withindale. Thank you. We've been wiggling and jiggling and it seems to have gotten worse. Or maybe I'm more annoyed by it?

OK, I just played it and it's definitely gotten worse. My neighbor has training as a piano technician and maybe he can take a look right away.

If it's getting worse and you're playing it a lot, you may risk damaging the piano by not having it fixed right now.

Sounds like wiggling it made it loose enough, for a fleeting moment, that something sticky moved in even deeper. I looked at a piano recently, and pulled several pieces of straw from between the keys. The seller said his mother puts a Nativity Scene on it each Christmag season. One was too deep to reach and caused the adjacent key to move with it.

The previous owner reported that one of the keys sticks, and thought something was stuck in the key. I'm wondering if transportation could have made it worse?

Just to update you all, I have a piano technician coming on the 11th. In his price for a tune (which this piano desperately needs) I also get 30 minutes of repairs. I checked the action and there are no problems with that, so something is wrong with the key itself. Hopefully the sticky key doesn't bother me too much in the time being, because old piano is being picked up today.
