One other thing about articulation I noticed: 4th note's are almost played like 8th's. Little gap between 4th note and following note.

Can the people that have worked on and through the JOI gIve a summary of how it was for them and where it has taken you? I have just began my journey.

I am also still an improvisation beginner but the book has helped me tremendously with getting my ear accustomed to the Jazz language. It teaches you good left hand chords without the theory. I am now noticing that I dont have to think much about left hand voicings because you pick these up automatically from working through the tunes.

The Hanons will develop your technique and if you do the singing with solo exercises dilligently you will develop a very good ear that is necessary for your growth. In retrospect I should have taken the singing with the solo stuff MUCH more seriously

I am back at improvising again. Even for two weeks now! (My shoulder got seriously hurt during a car accident so I had to quit playing for some time

Lovely line, gentle, flowing, slightly melancholy. Still.... I am so bad! I feel like I'm failing in a game of "Name those Changes." I may be wrong, delusional, misguided, barking up the wrong tree.... But they sound so familiar.... I just can't put my finger on it.

And that "New-York a-Mississippi" rhythm is somewhat reminiscent of measures 9 and 10 of Precipitation, which shares its changes and dreamy wistful quality with "Here's That Rainy Day"

yeah absolutely no fun. Good to see you again though. I try listen to as many tunes as I possibly can. Mostly oldschool '70 soul with some Jazz (Art Blakey's Mosaic right now) here and there to keep it real And I'm looking forward to Dave Frank's improv class coming soon. This will be fun!

Just listen to measures 9 and 10 of Precipitation, and for each measure say "New York a-Mississippi" in time with the eighth (e) and quarter (q) notes: "e q e e-e-e-e."

Then listen to your improv: You'll find the same pattern!

P.S. Dave Frank uses "Tennessee" for triplets, and generally suggests saying "slice of pizza" while you play to get into the swing of things.

For what I understand. The main challenge of playing bodhran along side other instrument is that it sometimes causes confusion in rhythm.
