I`ve been moaning like `ell about the time this has taken to Youtube, (one or two other problems too) and Soundcloud doesn`t seem much better. Then I happened to notice the size of the upload. A large upload for me would be around 100mb. This was 1.17 GB!! WHAT ON EARTH . . . you could expect a HD 2 hr film for that size!

I shake my head; haven`t a clue. Recorded in the usual way (l`il ole me on a phone camera) and Audacity. Joined the sound and vision on Videopad; added the software piano recorded in parallel . . .Done it before, no sweat . .

Cost me a fiver; I overshot my internet limit . . .!

Any ideas?

You probably did not compress the video.

Yeah, raw video files from any HD source are going to be huge. Once you have the completed video, you can use something like MPEG Streamclip (free) or similar to compress it. I'm able to get a 1.5GB video down to 150-200 MB. Even more if you lower the quality settings or change the frame size.

Windows Movie Maker can also output the video in a smaller size/compressed encoding if you are looking for a free program on windows.

Thanks guys, although I`bve never had a problem in the past. The vids were only 150mb until I trimmed `em down (forgot to switch it off) but the recorded audio needed amplifying . . .

You can easily scale down video files in Handbrake. Download it from handbrake.fr - I find it best to lower the bit rate (you can use other options like quality factor.) For YouTube, 2000 kilobits/second (kbps) should be enough. If you are recording in FULL HD or 1080p instead of HD, that is 720p, maybe you should set the bitrate to 3000 kbps.

This conversion should be done before you mix in other tracks, like the sound track of your playing and/or other sounds you add in.

By the way, how many minutes was this 1.7GB file? I've noticed that the newer phones like Samsung S3/S4 use up 150-200 MB per minute, does the Iphone produce bigger files?

It is also dependent upon the resolution and format of the original video, obviously RAW format will be the largest/cleanest video but at a cost.

If the resolution is high (true HD or higher) then obviously for every frame you are recording (Frames per second also contribute) you are saving that many more pixels along with it, if you are recording for the likes of youtube videos etc you usually (unless fussy) need no more than 420p of course if you want to go 720p or above thats like going from 640x480 to 1280x720 the frame sizes grow considerably and thus so does the size smile

Compressing will work but just like audio depending on how much you compress and what type of compression you use will affect the overall quality of the recording MPEG for example is overly compressed will prevent updates of the image on still/dark areas to reduce the size... the trouble is should the lighting suddenly change or a fast motion occur you get big blocks of pixelation in those areas, not nice!
