Lately, I'm having a real hard time focusing and sitting down and learning my new materials. I still spend time at the piano, albeit not as much as I should and used too. I find myself playing thru pieces I've already mastered for fun. It really showed at my last lesson, I was downright embarrassed. I guess I'm just looking for some external motivation to get me thru this!! I really really really do love piano and have a great desire to push myself thru this and get to where I ultimately want to be. My reading is poor, I tend to memorize things quickly and work on my coordination and use all sorts of weird cues to learn things, all the wrong cues tho..... this seems to be a problem with me, I'll do things in very odd ways, but they work great for me.
I always did math in my head in very very odd ways that others had trouble understanding, but I was usually right! I think I'm finding "easier" ways to learn pieces that give me results quicker, but don't do much to develop myself musically and especially reading wise.
I skipped two days last week too. I'm a bad man ;(

How do you go about learning, and what kind of music do you play? You say your reading is poor. Does that mean force yourself to muddle through sheet music to learn what you want? Ever tried playing by ear and/or following lead sheets?

i have a teacher, i use sheets. But i typically look at the sheet, break it apart then memorize it quick. So I stop looking at the sheet after a bit. I also have a hard time reading ahead.... i can when i do, but i just never do. this is really all on me the more i read that post.

A great external motivation is to set up a performance: formal, informal, to friends, to strangers, doesn't matter.
What does matter is:
* set a date * commit to playing at least one new piece
Whether that performance is a triumph or a disaster, set up another.
Rinse, repeat.
Cadence? Depends on how fast you can get a new piece to performable level.

The best motivator is to learn only pieces you really enjoy and really want to learn. However learning anything as intense as piano has it's up and down periods and you may just be a bit of a trough.
Practicing as a daily routine is all about discipline so a good habit is to have a written plan for your practice eg 20mins sight reading, 20min "new piece" 10mins scalse, etc. I use a timer for this purpose. You could also put your old repertoire at the end as a sort of reward for the hard work of the session.
There is always room to play the pieces you have learned and love, nothing wrong with that
Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience. Kawai K8 & Kawai Novus NV10 13x

Don't worry about whether your learning process is "normal" or not. Everybody is different and learns in different ways, it's only the results that matter. If you make progress by doing something "weird", then it may just be the optimal strategy for you.
