Quite enjoyable. Should you ever have the chance to hear Garrick live, do so. Phenomenal pianist and a great guy. He does very well with students. Notice, for those recently inquiring about memorisation, the student's ability to begin in any spot immediately.

Sometimes I feel his playing lacks color and finesse. It's a little too dry and straightforward. And he sometimes misses the grand scheme of a work for the details.

Hmmm... interesting, especially since I thought I read where you said you weren't too familiar with him. Interesting too, that you find his playing lacks "finesse", yet you feel he misses the "grand scheme... for the details."

Yes, it can be both. Finesse does not only mean technical details.

Oh, no, of course not. I wasn't even thinking about the technical aspect of things. I wonder, to you, what defines "finesse" in regard to music.

I saw him live playing Rach 3. As great his playing was, it somehow felt like the orchestra and the pianist weren't quite together in the first movement... they had a hard time synchronizing together until the second movement, which was absolutely gorgeous.
Formidable pianist, but I'm ambivalent towards his complete Chopin edition.

It can be anything, from the minutest change in the tone of a single note to the shaping of an entire phrase. It's a very broad term, in my view.

I attended a Garrick Ohlsson recital, at Alice Tully Hall about a year ago, and was disappointed. His rendition of Chopin's Barcarolle was sloppy and heavy-handed.

He also played some of the left-hand parts of Chopin's op. 10, no. 12 with his right hand. I figured he was "goofing" with the etude, since he certainly didn't have to cheat; somewhat distasteful, I thought.

For me, Ohlsson's playing is a mixed bag. I heard him play the Busoni concerto in Boston around 1990 (with the Cleveland Orchestra on tour) and it was overwhelming - even better than the recording. On the other hand, I saw him play the Tchakovsky 2 early this year and it was flaccid, with distracing memory lapses in the final movement.

For the most part, I've liked his Beethoven Sonatas (his careful voice leading in the opening movement of Op. 2, No. 3 makes his recording a favorite of mine). But his Chopin Scherzos are overthought and devoid of frisson.

Nevertheless, I've always found Ohlsson very articulate in interviews and I'd think a masterclass with him could be very useful.

Ohlsson is a wonderful musician and pianist. I wouldn't say I like everything he plays but there are performances of his that I LOVE. I think it's perfectly human for him to be inconsistent over the course of his career or even from performance to performance.

Even more important, I enjoy his personality and generosity which is always on display when he speaks in interviews or master classes.

I grew up listening to his Chopin prelude disc (yes on vinyl) so he has a special place for me. I listened to it everyday when I got home from school. Otherwise however I have not been a great fan but I dont dislike his playing. Its pretty much neutral for me.

I don't think that Ohlsson has fared particularly well in recordings. But, having heard him both live and in broadcasts quite a few times, he is ranks among the very best living pianists I've heard. Various things from him stick in my memory as truly great performances.

But, as people are saying, he's not consistently wonderful (who is?), and so you have to realize that any given concert may not represent what he can really do. He's also not one of the most charisma-exuding celebs of the piano world, so there's not that automatic electricity that happens with those types. An Argerich or Pogorelich he's not.

Hey guys. Sorry for reviving this thread but I was wondering if anyone has a link to the video since this one has gone private. I remember watching both this and the other one where he gave a masterclass about the 3rd ballade, but I can't find them anymore (probably since they went private). So if anyone has different links or has downloaded them etc, I'd appreciate it if you can tell me where to look or provide info :P

I will be very frank with fellow pianists. For me to pay for fair seating, at a great hall then make the trip to that city I need to see a mind blowing pianist. There are perhaps 5-7 currently active. But Garrick Ohlsson is not one of them. He is a very good teacher but his playing has never left me inspired. Perahia, Sokolov both Yes. But Ohlsson is very dry at times.

I was looking for that the other day too! I had it saved, but I accidentally erased it... I think they took it off Youtube.
I thought that the kid's playing (the one who did the 3rd ballade) was somewhat unmusical and did not enjoy his playing. But Ohlsson's lessons are so enjoyable, I am so bummed that it disappeared! frown

Oh what a shame! Frankly, I quite enjoyed the lessons; they give you a new perspective on the music. I really loved the younger kid, he was very brilliant and capable... I wish I started when he did :P

If I ever come across them I'll be sure to tell you, because it's a loss as it is right now frown
