Playing your digital using both internal voice and software piano. The software will come through the computer speakers and doesn`t have to be loud. If those are positioned conveniently to the side, the interaction even at low volumes is really good . . . and sounds very acoustic, if ya don`t mind my saying so . .! The general feel of the instrument when playing also seems better too.

Yup, it's a very interesting effect. A lot can be done in terms of layers but even more so in terms of the position of the sound.

Hmm...I've always mixed to a single pair of monitors. This would be easy to try. On the other hand, layering already creates more variables than I can ever hope to optimize.
