My teacher just confirmed that my choice (Mazurka from Op. 39) is reasonable for my level. He said I might not be able to play it at the indicated speed though.

As soon as I finish the Bach Prelude I'm working on, we'll switch to the Mazurka.

When will we have the opportunity to select a second piece? I'm considering a piece that is pretty difficult, and in order to learn it before the deadline, I'll have to start practicing soon.

Just a title correction . . .

First of all, what I say doesn't count as we're trying for this to be self-governing as much as possible but here's my thinking on it.

This isn't intended to be a stab at a complete list of Tchaikovsky's work but more a piece each from his catalogue. There's no problem doing more than one piece but initial feelings were that extras be given up for someone new to the recital. With such a gamut of easy pieces still remaining and a list of 33 performers (I think the Mendelssohn got up to 34 after several months but this one's only been up a fortnight) I don't think that's an issue here.

Bearing in mind that we still have to listen to all these pieces and the more that get taken the longer that's going to take.

We first touted the idea of opening up for second helpings after November 15 or December 1 to give interested parties to both hear about it and also to choose a piece.

Morodiene has unofficially snagged Opus 2 as a set. I have no issue if you want to pick a difficult piece but I'd rather wait until December 1 before double names went on Opp. 39 and 40. There are still some forum regulars that haven't picked a piece yet who may just need a little courage and a bit more time.

First choices are bold with the performer's name in parentheses. Should we decide now on marking extra pieces in italics with the performer's name in angle brackets or similar?

Does anyone else have an opinion they'd like to share?

So is anybody already learning their piece? I have mine (Italian Song, op. 39 no. 15) memorized, I sorted out the "difficult" parts and I can play it through at 50 or 60 bpm. I'm quite happy with what I managed to do in two weeks, but I know that now comes the hard part - polishing and bringing it up to tempo. I listened to a terribly fast recording but there is no way I will play it at more than 120 bpm!

Pfffft, lucky you lol I'm upto measure 18 (of 95) and already come accross a stretch problem, Bb, C, Bb (no way of compensating the lower Bb with my left hand, 'cos it's needed elsewhere) ...so may have to either miss out the lower Bb, or the C, and just carry on. I doubt there are any solutions to this...

I have M19-23 memorised, polished and pre-recorded up to tempo and M36-39 memorised and polished but slowly. The first phrase occurs with very little change about a dozen times in the total 66 measures and M19-23 is the trickiest variant.

I'm working on M32-36 RH only.

I've only been through the rest once or twice looking for potential technical difficulties that will need isolation or special exercises and found none. I think I have the hardest parts licked and I intend to forget them once I've got them up to tempo and relearn them after I've done the remaining phrases.

I don`t seem able to handle the first page . . .it`s blisteringly fast and I`m still playing it sooo slow; Hard to memorise (necessary unfortunately) because almost every phrase is different . . .but I love it. If I mess up, I mess up!
