I was seated at my music teacher's monstrous Victorian upright when her husband burst into our lesson to tell us President Kennedy was dead. So where were you?

On stage for a gradeschool play rehearsal in the school auditorium when Ricky Z., a sixth grader, burst into the room screaming "the President is shot"....we all thought he was kidding at first....until a teacher talked to him and confirmed the awful truth.

At age 3, I was at home, staring at the black and white TV screen, not understanding what all the fuss was about. One of 2 things I remember from being a 3 year old.

In a high school physics class - 2 of my friends burst in to the room and reported it to the rest of the class.

I just watched an old film of the body arriving in DC. Made me cry.

Third grade. I was leaving school and the police crossing guard told me. Ironically at the very spot I had once seen the president go by in a limo on his way from laguardia airport to NYC.

Just out of High School. Working in a large insurance company -- the announcement came over the PA system. A little later they announced they were sending everyone home early. Very shocking and sad time for most everyone.

I was a few weeks short of turning three, and don't remember it at all. But (obviously somewhat later) I do remember understanding that the President had been shot, but feeling reassured that the VP was now on duty, taking care of things at the White House.

I was in the first grade. My Grandfather came to pick us up from school. We walked home and all the way, every store, establishment we passed had the same TV station on. Outside of what was being broadcasted, there was no every day sound. It felt very erie. I knew who President Kennedy was and what his job was. More than that, in my house it felt like a family member had died.

Hard to believe it was 50 years ago.
Even JohnJohn is gone now.

Does everyone remember that everybody cried for President Kennedy? Everyone....

I was 3.

EDIT: Just to change to more self centered. I remember it well. It was the first big event in my memory. I can't remember where I was when it happened. I'm sure I was at home, with my mother and siblings in upstate NY. I had to piece things together from how all the adults were acting. Was as if the world was coming to an end...at first. I remember watching the funeral from a recliner that was reclined partially. TV was a 19 inch black and white. Adults were too upset to stay sitting down. Remember JohnJohn saluting. Felt so sorry for him. He was putting on an act. He was caught up in being part of the ceremony. Just like his mom was. He was just like me and he lost his daddy. All I could think was he lost his daddy.
We had lots and lots of relatives and friends there. Lived in a very very friendly neighborhood. Neighbors would just walk in the door, it seemed. I remember everybody cried for Pres. Kennedy. I wondered why everyone didn't cry for the man down the street when he died?

I was on a USN Guided Missile Destroyer out at sea. That really dates me. We were just due to make port in Charleston S.C. coming back from a Med cruise.

I remember it well.

I was in Grade 12. It was around 11 a.m. here, I think - before lunchtime, anyway. Don't remember what class - I just remember the principal's voice coming over the PA telling us that the president of the U.S. had been shot. & they sent us home from school for the rest of the day. However, I just heard ex-Prime Minister Joe Clark on the TV news & he said he was at university here in Vancouver - UBC - & they didn't cancel any classes; he said he always wondered why not.

No idea where I was when it happened (I was only 5), but I do remember seeing the funeral on tv and not really understanding what it was about, only that it was important.

I was in Grade 11. I was in an American literature class when an announcement was made over the school's public address system saying that the President had been shot. It felt surreal. About 10 minutes later the Principal announced the President Kennedy was dead. I only remember feeling dazed. I could hardly believe what I had just heard. About an hour later we were sent home and school was closed for the rest of the week.

When I got home both of my parents were home and we all watched the news together on television. I think we were home for the remainder of the week.

Oh, now that you mention it, I do remember the funeral on TV!! I remember feeling sad for his kids, being a similar age myself.

That funeral, however, (at least in my mind) marked the beginning of a frustrating period of little-girl-hood wherein everyone remarked how much I looked like Carolyn Kennedy. I personally never saw much resemblance (aside from hair color) so this was inordinately unsatisfying to my young self.

I was a USAF Lt at the time, working in a hardened facility, for an equally hardened old colonel. He had survived several years of brutal treatment as a POW. Tough as nails, people said. Man of steel, people said. But when he tried to talk about the Kennedy assassination, his voice wavered. He had to turn his head to hide his tears. It was all quite unthinkable.

I'd pulled into a filling station near Birmingham, England, to fill up with petrol, the attendant ran out to tell me President Kennedy had been assassinated.

Fifth grade class -- just coming back from lunch. It was a religious school, and Kennedy's election had held a special significance for students and teachers. More important, he just connected so well with people that many of us felt like we had lost a family member.

My grandmother -- not a Catholic -- said she cried more over that weekend than she had over her own mother's death.

Fifth grade having an art class drawing turkeys for Thanksgiving. Principal came in and announced the President had been shot and was dead. We were all stunned and were sent home shortly after.

His motorcade passed near my house after he gave a speech whilst campaigning, touched his hand as his car (open top) passed. I remembered that immediately when I heard he was dead and recall thinking how young he was.
