Hi.
Many of you may remember me from a post about 8 months ago about my 2012 NY D which wasn't to my liking.

Without going to great detail, I was able to arrange selection in Hamburg for a D in October and my piano arrived to my home today.

This piano is absolutely spectacular and if anyone would like I'd be happy to write a review on this piano and the differences I see and hear between the NY and German models.

Maybe I will make a recording this weekend if something simple. You have to hear this thing. The dynamic range is out of this world!!! All the way from a whisper to a thundering strike with practically no effort to do both!

Thanks for those who were supportive through my process of finding the perfect piano.

Congratulations, Noam. This piano will be a treasure, assumedly for years and years. Maybe even your last piano, because it's hard to imagine trading up from a nine-foot German Steinway.

Cheers from Toronto!

Congratulation!!!

The piano is so shiny, is it lacquer or ebony?

So you flew to Hambourg then they sent the piano directly to your house or by intermediate a Steinway dealer in USA? Please develop the interesting story about how you get this piano.

Thanks very much

Polyester, just like other high gloss piano finishes.

Well there is always a Bosie Imperial or a Stuart and Sons 102 note behemoth! thumb

Seriously, congratulations Noam. I know it was quite a journey.

As one of the few people I have come in contact with who has owned a new NY D and a new Hamburg D, I am looking forward to your impressions of the contrast between the two.

This has never been exactly a secret for me for many years.

Being in Germany regularly and having ample access to the pianos through some of my tuner friends, I was always amazed how these 2 pianos could even share the name.

Congrats and blissfully enjoy - you'll have no choice!

Many many congratulations. You will have a lifetime of pleasure and inspiration from this instrument. I love your picture of all the "D's" on parade!. Everyone is waiting to hear about your comparison. How do you find the concert grand in a domestic room, personally I love it.

Thank you all for your comments and support!!! Just posted a review. I'm not a journalist so take it easy on me hahaha

To answer your question you must watch this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cVlTeIATBs

That sound is maybe 95Db but it's unbearable right? hahaha

A piano that has a beautiful sound won't seem loud because of its beauty. There is no doubt the D is louder than an upright, but an ugly sounding upright will seem louder...

There would be NO ISSUE putting that D in a small 14x10 carpeted room, trust me!

Dear Ben:

I'd like to join Greg in offering the most sincere and happy congratulations on your new piano. Poor fellow, it was a long time coming.

For me, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow will always be a Hamburg D.

Bye the bye, just how DID you unload the unfortunate Astoria D ?

Thank you Karl.

I purchased the NY D from Sherman clay which is out of business and since I was so happy with it I contacted Steinway corporate and they took it back and I had to pay a hefty sum in trade difference for the Hamburg.

It went pretty smoothly. Steinway wants happy customers and after discussing my taste in sound preference it was obvious that getting me into a Hamburg was the only way to out a smile on my face.

They took the trade at full value and I paid the difference of the Hamburg at full value. Yeah, dont go trying to bypass the dealer to get a killer deal because there is no such thing.

The only deal is finding a piano that you will love forever.

Selection date was October 29 in Hamburg and the piano arrived fairly quickly considering customs etc. The flight was a breeze. They put it on a direct Lufthansa flight from Frankfort to Portland but since I'm relocated temporarily to SOCAL, I had the piano trucked immediately here.

Oh my GOODNESS!!! I remember reading your original thread and feeling really saddened that you had put out all that money and still didn't have a piano that you loved. I'm really happy to hear that you now do have one that you love, even if you did have to put out some more money. Also, I live in SOCAL, and if you are agreeable, I'd just love to play that piano. I've played almost every high end piano out there, but I don't think I've ever played a Hamburg D. The only trouble is that going back home to my lowly Yamaha C3 will be VERY difficult after seeing your beautiful piano...

Congratulations, once again! laugh

Sure thing. Pm me if you are ever about 30 miles north of San Diego and you can stop by and practice on it for a couple of hours. Would be fun to play for each other no?

It would probably be more fun for you to play for me than vice versa. I'll never be 30 miles north of San Diego by chance, but it would make a nice little Sunday road trip to go out there and meet you, hear some great piano music, and drive back.

Congratulations again Mr. Noam-
I enjoyed your sound clip. Sounds very good. Definitely a dream come true.
Who did you hire in Germany (presumably Hamburg?) to help select the piano?

Best regards-
