Hi folks. Thought I'd start the December bar. Been below zero up here in Alaska so far. Today got up to 13 degrees and felt kinda warm. How strange smile Hope you guys are staying warmer than I am!

Here's my own arrangement of Just a Closer Walk with Thee

That was absolutely lovely, Lady Payne. Had a lovely jazzy feel to it but yet, it was so sweet.

It's below freezing here too. I'm in Winnipeg, Canada.

I recorded this piece last week:

BRIAN CRAIN: Canon in D

How do you post the YouTube thumbnail, by the way?

Hello! The Dec Piano Bar has dropped off the leader board already! I remember this tune. Sung in Pentecostal Churches by the oldest members surviving . . .who were heavily influenced by the 1904 "Revival" which spread throughout the Western world followed by the upheaval of war. . . the merry sound of out of tune pianos (I had to play one, lol it was a shocker) which didn`t sound bad at the back of the room!

Nicely done, LadyPayne!

You really got into that well, lass! A "pop" classic of yesteryear, paves the way for much more recent stuff. Way ahead of it`s time in it`s simplicity and concept. Enjoyed greatly! . . AND you got all those comments on Youtube! I`m insanely jealous!

Ladypayne, a great performance of that wonderful hymn.

Candlelightpiano, very well played and that grand looks good. About how to make the preview, just click the fifth button from the left on the posting form and paste the YouTube link in the text box that pops up.

Winter Light

"Winter Light" the theme from the 80's movie "The Secret Garden". from Pianonewbie1 on Vimeo.

[/video]

This song is titled –“Winter Light" and was the first song I wanted to learn on Piano.
The score is from the movie the “The Secret Garden “at MusicNotes .com
I am now learning the original score, which is beautiful -composed by Zbigniew Priesner “Winter light.”
Someone very nice who I’ve know for a long time told me his name is pronounced Ziegtiev,(ZIEGTIV) with a “T” not “B”. And no WAH for the “W”
I do regret the poor video quality but my camcorder works best in daylight, and I have to convert the “vid” to upload for dial up.
Please comment,- positive or negative
It is played on a Casio PX 100 thru a Marantz amplifier then directly to Dell computer. No music effects or editing (nor video) .

I've been working on this piece for some time now, and was going to submit it for the last recital but it wasn't ready. Anyways I had to play this piece for my final exam two days ago. Unfortunately I wont be taking piano lessons anymore, but I had fun with them for the past year.
As always I recorded the piece with my cell phone.

That was lovely, Augustina. Lots of spirit. It brought back memories of playing Clementi long, long ago. I hope you'll keep playing piano even if you're not taking lessons anymore. You play beautifully.

Pianonewbie1, this was good, I definitely notice improvement.
Candlelightpiano, nice performance of Ave Maria.
Augustina, that was very good, a lively piece.

Decided to put up a classic I've been working on, Can't Help Falling In Love, before turning to Christmas stuff. Without the bridge though, still having trouble with the chords therein. blush Recorded with an electric piano voice, no pedal, tried it first, but felt the sound became overwhelming.

Truly enjoyable to listen to, the winter sparrows outside are likely chirping to your elegantl playing of “Ave Maria”.
I heard the ending dynamics very well, whether they were your‘s or marked on the score, it was swell. (Applause, Applause)

Nice playing, memory invoking and inspirational.
I’d bet a Grand piano sound with the damper pedal would be even more so.

Thank you pianonewbie1. I just wanted to record something with electric piano. cool The usual grand piano sound is possibly better and I might record it again in grand piano, once I've crossed the bridge. grin

It is exciting to see so many great entries this month!

candlelightpiano - That was a great performance of Ave Maria! I like how you manage to play so smooth and with so much emotion. Great job! About two years ago, when I just got started with playing the piano again, I recorded this piece with a friend who plays the trumpet. Here is our interpretation of this lovely piece of music:

Ladypayne - Great arrangement and lovely playing!

Pianonewbie - Another great performance from you! I don't know this piece but it sounds really nice. Thanks for sharing!

Augustina - That was a a performance full of engery! Great playing!

Theodor - What a lovely rendition of an old classic. It is a hard piece to play solo like this but you pulled it off. Great job!

Elssa - It is always great to see you make music at your magical piano. I really liked it! Is that your arrangement?

Thank you Amaruk. Even though Can't Help... has some tricky chord changes, it't quite regularly structured and treble and bass are not completely out of proportion with each other, unlike some of the Beatles tunes I've been studying. They often have such an irregular right hand, that I always mix up. At least when the melody is included.

Wonderful rendition of Ave Maria, from you and your partner. I love your videos, it always makes the listening more enjoyable to put in a good video with the song. That's why they invented music videos I guess!

Musically excellent to me , the trumpet gives it a different feel, (than an solo organ or piano) I have heard it played duet like this at a wedding,-and it wasn’t military. (first son getting married kind of thing)
The music video is artistically provocative. Super cool video, and juxtaposition of themes.
Somehow it gave me a breath of fresh thinking (air)
Thank you.

Shared my video on Facebook and a good friend of mine, who is an experienced keyboard/piano player, was inspired to put up this tutorial video of how to use the pedal (which I must shamefully admit I skipped altogether in my performance!) Thought I'd share, if it helps anyone.

Thank you so much, Amaruk, Pianonewbie and TheodorN. Your kind comments mean a lot to me.

TheodorN: Nice rendition of Can't Help Falling in Love, one of my favorite songs.

Elssa: Lovely arrangement of Waltz of the Flowers. I could feel the ballerinas flitting across the stage.

Amaruk: I loved the piccolo trumpet and piano duet and the NASA photos. A very moving piece of music, so lovingly and beautifully performed. And soaring to space!

I`m sat in the drawing room of this country house; it`s Sunday and I`ve had a fine meal and am pleasantly inebriated on port wine (damn this gout lol) whilst the beautiful daughter of the host is playing piano. That`s you, of course. Truly delightful! Bravo! More! (host moves over and whispers "Shut up Peter; the Bishop`s here . . .)
Lovely performance! Bravo! More . . .

Thank you for your kind words, candlelightpiano.

Elssa, that was very lovely, Waltz Of Two Flowers.

Just have to let this link follow, it came up as a related video on YouTube. A duo of the same piece, it's amazing how they play it in perfect unison. Obviously not beginners, but what makes it special to me, is that this is a performance in Dunkers Kulturshus (house of culture.) It's played at the Helsingborg Piano Festival. This house of culture is close to where I live and I've been there a few times, though not at a piano concert.

Last Friday, 12/6, my piano professor had scheduled a recital of his secondary students (of which I am one).
However, it was canceled due to the ice storm that was due to hit us that day.

It was rescheduled for last evening, but due to an email mixup I didn't get word until it was too late and had to miss.

Here's the email I sent to my professor and the other participants in the recital.

-----------------------------------------

Hello all!

I was supposed to be in the recital last night, but due to email mixups I wasn’t able to be there. Too bad for me since I was really looking forward to hearing each of you as well as playing for you.

This crazy thing called music… we work hard and it’s important to share what we do, warts and all.

After I got home, I decided to record my part of the program with the provision that no matter what happened (the warts part), I would post it on youtube and send each of you a link. My son Gavin and his friend Zach Michaud showed up unexpectedly, so along with my partner Greg I had an ‘audience’ and made them suffer through it! smile

(btw, sorry for the iPad recording… one of these days I’ll get a better setup… you hear clipping on the peaks in this)

Here ya go.

Beethoven Op. 78, Adagio Cantabile, Allegro ma non troppo

above link takes you here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDs-z1c0_o8

best, (and keep playing – it’s way better than TV!)

Thanks, Amaruk. Yes, I always make up my own arrangements.. Sometimes I play by ear and other times might take a basic lead sheet and reharmonize the chords, add in runs & fills, etc. smile
I really enjoyed your "Ave Maria" - cool arrangement and video, as always! cool

I loved your "Ave Maria", too, Candlelightpiano.. beautiful flow - mesmerizing to listen to. smile

Woodog: What a terrific performance, warts and all. It wouldn't be as human without the warts, frankly, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening to you, especially at 6:06 at the crashing chords! Made the whole piece seem more human, which is what Beethoven was to me, the most human of all composers, the greatest composer of all time. You did justice to the great man!

Candlelight, thanks for the kind words.

I had to put it up as it was because I have a tendency to shy away from playing in public, even though I've been in bands and a church musician for EVER. Go figure...

It's a strange mixture of wanting to share the music, but getting freaked out the minute I think anyone might be listening. Don't know if that makes sense or not... but it's certainly NOT a healthy way to go about this music thing.

That's another reason I was looking forward to the recital, because I had braced myself, psyched myself up and was feeling good about being able to play for my fellow students, knowing that there would be mistakes, knowing that I would get nervous, rush, whatever, and feeling okay about that too. It was a good feeling and I was so bummed out that I didn't get to go through with it.

So when my son showed up with his friend unexpectedly - and both of them are anything BUT classical music buffs, LOL... I figured that was the next best thing, to record it and send it to the folks who were in the recital as well as my teacher.

again, thanks for the compliment! made me grin inwardly today!

Good sound on that piano of yours; how hard it is for a trumpet not to let rip! Perhaps he should've been outside the building . . .! Enjoyed it, man!

Candlelight – a very nice rendition of Canon in D and that Ave Maria…wow! just lovely.

Augustina – Such a lively performance. Good dynamics and rhythm. Well done!

Woodog – I’m sorry you missed your recital. But I bet your son and his friend were impressed just like the rest of us. That was an awesome performance.

Hey everybody

After a long break, I've finally decided to upload another video. I'm the proud owner of a Yamaha P105 portable piano, which is a decent upgrade from another Yamaha keyboard (that didn't have full piano keys).

A short background about me: almost 3 years of piano (mostly self taught), and in the last couple of months I've been learning to read sheet music, with the help of a piano teacher

Enjoy and let me know your feedback:

Thanks, Augustina, on my Ave Maria. Really appreciate your kind comments.

Tequilla85: Beautiful rendition of River Flows in You. You have a lovely touch. Maybe it could be a tad bit faster in the middle section but otherwise, it's definitely getting there. For someone who is only learning to read music, you're doing fabulous. Plenty of notes to read in this piece! Keep the music coming!

Tequilla85 You play this very precisely which augers well for the future. Sounds lovely on your piano; the music is eminently suitable . Why not try a bit more reverb/echo?

You're doing good, Tequilla85! A lot easier learning on that P105 than that other one, isn't it? Keep it up.

Takes ya back a century or more, those songs you played. You know, to a time when people actually believed . . . .well done man! (I call everybody "man" btw)

My first attempt at recording my piano!

http://soundcloud.com/fateskeys/mic-experiment-1

Chopin Op 28 No 4. I was more concerned about doing the recording than the playing shocked Input would be appreciated, my upright isn't that great, and I'm still not sure I've got the mic setup right. (Fishtank and dog don't help either...)

Still catching up here..

LadyPayne: Hope it's a bit warmer up there now. I really enjoyed your arrangement with all the the trills and frills you threw in! smile

Augustina: The Clementi piece was so well played and fun to listen to! These are such great pieces - and challenging as well. smile

Nice playing! The violin isn`t offensive at all. Believe me, that`s a complement . . .and your piano was lovely! Plenty o` light and shade on your pieces. You`ll get better and better! Have fun!

Thanks for the kind comments, Tequilla85. You play beautifully. Your piano is great. It's portable which isn't the case with mine. You can take it everywhere!!!

Happy New Year to you.

Pianonewbie: That was a lovely, reverential Tchaikovsky prayer. I must confess I've never heard it before. Your O HOLY NIGHT was lovely, too. Happy New Year to you.

FATE: You played this tragic piece the way it was supposed to be played! I love Chopin even though many of his works are choked with heartbreak and I love this piece. You played it beautifully, with a lovely singing tone and with great feeling.

Happy New Year!

Ellsa, that was a lovely arrangement of Through the eyes of love. If you don't mind, what are you doing when you hit the switch during the piece?

Happy new year to you!

That was a lovely Ave Maria, candelightpiano. You bring out the best sound in your piano, it seems to sing. I have a yamaha GC3 but haven't mastered it as well as you yet. Give me a few more years!

Thanks Candlelightpiano. Your piano room is beautiful. I wish I could have a room like that to play music in. Unfortunately, mine is stuck in a small bedroom.
