Hi Folks,

So with the time of year being what it is currently I am going to have roughly a 3 week gap before my next lesson (can schedule one between if needed)

I was last working on basic sonatinas since my reading is not great and nowhere near my actual level of playing, I have been given the task of bringing this up to performance level for the new year along with another piece for fun.

Last night I watched "Howl's moving castle" and gave it a quick shot this morning by ear and it doesn't seem too difficult to pick up the foundations or improvise around, so I was wondering...

Should I get the proper sheets for the theme and try to read/work from them on the side? surely anything extra I can put into reading/playing (including more variety) is going to help in the long run?

Not only that but it is something which I genuinely want to learn to play properly so perhaps it would give me a motivational boost while at the same time improving my playing/reading?

Oh to add to this I am in no hurry to get it done, nor am I expecting miracles... so even if it takes 6 months to a year I can always come back to it smile

Logic tells me I am completely out of my mind as I would only manage a little a day... but another part of me says hey give it a go (nothing to lose like) =/

How to answer this...? With Ikarus as a handle, I would urge caution.

Haha, I was just thinking more along the lines of long term correction/learning it properly smile

I can always play it by ear but it won't be right... (it'll sound fine but won't be perfect) I suppose with the sheets I could compare and patch up/add any bits I got wrong/missed.

At least that's the plan.... using the sheets more as a guide

I think you should learn it and have a wonderful time. If you get in over your head and it stops being fun, then you can always put it on hold and work on easier stuff for a while.

Is that the Merry-go-round piece, the main theme, in 3/4 time, right? If I'm remembering right, I think it has lots of repeating sections, and although the actual page-length might be a little long, it isn't that much in terms of unique sections. I think you should give it a go, and as mentioned above, if it starts to seem like too much you can set it aside for later.

It sure is, "Merry go round of life" taking a step back it is not what I'd call complicated ... just something I have never attempted before smile

I picked up a good 3-4 minutes rough copy of it by ear this morning so I think using the sheets as a guide to make sure I have it right and touch things up it shouldn't be too difficult, I just wonder how long this determination will last.

In the words of my first teacher, "Of course. All music is good." I took this to mean, "There's no music that it's bad to work on. Just don't spend all your time on it."

UKIkarus, play it as you like. The important is to have fun with it.
If you want to play "by-the-book", why not? Give it a try.

Somewhat related, here's a pretty contemporary arrangement of Sekai no Yakusoku, the closing music to Howl's Moving Castle.

It's at 1 hour 3 minutes 19 seconds

Several of the pieces in the video are very professionally arranged, this being one of my favorite.
