Said firmly tongue-in-cheek... But. Why in Sam Hill do so many new vertical pianos have these wimpy, fold-up, guaranteed-to-break music desks, nowadays? They're good for nothing, even considering looks.

For functionality, sure. They stink. The ones with inserts at the bottom are slightly better.
For breakage, I never have seen problems. Now, certain grand piano music desks, I've seen my fair share of broken attachment points and stripped screws!

In my opinion, any music desk less substantial than on a Baldwin Hamilton school/church piano is worse than junk.

I used to own an early 80s Kawai US-50, a 50" upright. Best music desk of any piano I've seen.
Wide enough for three sheets side-by-side.
Bottom lip is wide/thick enough for big music books.
Solid because of its hinged attachment to the piano's upper front panel.
It's sad that so many upright pianos cannot compare.

I completely agree with this topic! And I also agree with 88Key. I often recommend school models for the vary reason that they have so much more room for music. Its another reason I like old uprights. Most piano players love having lots of music out on the piano within reach. The little fold down desks a la U-1 are annoyingly inadequate.
