Hey guys

Can you tell me the best edition to Medtner music? I'm looking for the Sonata Trágica.

Thanks

We get this question all the time. And as always, it depends on what qualities you're looking for in an edition. Affordability? Durability? Reliability?

I have used both the Dover and the Zimmermann editions. Dover as usual is inexpensive but the Zimmermann has more notes per page which means a lot fewer page turns. (This does make a big difference in the ones I have used.) I didn't find any significant differences between the editions as far as the actual music goes. To get the complete sonatas Dover is about 1/10 the price as buying the individual Zimmermann.

Medtner is a great find! Nothing is easy but the rewards are worthy of the effort.

Miguel,

These are the only two editions I have been able to find in the USA. I am not even sure the Zimmermann is still available. I really don't think you will have too many choices with a composer like Medtner. It is kind of like finding someone other than Boosey for Bartok's Microcosmos. Who do you think has an error filled edition?

This Medtner website is often a good source of information about editions and errors. From what they say, it looks like the 2005 Zimmerman edited by Flamm may be the one you want.
