AZ Astro, I played In Church for my Level 5 exam (RCM) and found I liked it best at about 50 where it sounded meditative. Of course some days at church are more lively. It is a lovely little piece with subtle challenges. Enjoy.

I play it 3-5 times a day now and still enjoy it. There are depths to the piece I didn't realize. My technical struggles are now focused on: trying not to take too much liberty with rubato, hitting the notes of a chord at exactly the same time, and dynamics. I am really pleased with the piece and where it has taken me.

So how are people enjoying their selection(s) so far? I'm hoping to have a recording of the first & third movements (Op.2) by Jan. 10th, and then the 2nd by Jan. 19th. I know I have lots of time, but since I already got started, I don't think it would be a good idea to work on this all the way until April 15. I learned my lesson from the Grieg in dragging some of that out too long and I got tired of one piece in particular.

A couple of things I've noticed about his compositions is that they have hemiolas and syncopations to throw things off beat a little. Also, he likes to repeat something directly of very close to directly two times before moving on. Since this is an early Opus, I've compared this to hi Op 50 piano trio that I'm working on. I see that by then he learned to be a bit more creative and do sequences rather than a simple repeat of the material, but the syncopations stayed.

What have you noticed about your pieces?

This one is yet unclaimed, but L'espiegle (Op. 72 no. 12) is the Black Swan variation from Swan Lake, with some additional material for a B section. Just in case that piques anyone's interest

(I've played the variation but think that would actually make it harder for me to come up with a non-ballet-accompanist interpretation, which is why I chose other pieces for this.)

Another Swan Lake borrow is the Neapolitan Song in Op. 39.

This is the first time I will play Tchaikovski. That's part of the reason that I participate in this recital. The other reason is that I'm able to let people hear me play. ( don't know if that's good though )

I've only browsed through the pieces and found awkward arpeggios in op 72 no. 14 which need tricky fingering. It will take some time to get to know these.
Op 72 no. 15 has for me a tricky rhythm, but I hope I will manage!

Well, to be very honest, I've barely touched mine. I have just started seriously looking at it this week. It isn't even a full page, and it doesn't seem any more complicated than the Grieg piece I did. I am sure I'll be fine for April

I've been focusing on my sonatina and my teacher didn't want me to be working on other material very much in this period so mostly I've been just "relaxing" when not working on the sonatina. I am now at the point where the sonatina is in good enough shape that we'll add in some new pieces and my choice will be my Mr. T piece (I've already informed my teacher that I need to do it for April )

Mine is June - Barcarolle. Traditionally a barcarolle is in 3, but this one is in 4. But at times it has the feel of being in 3, either because the 4th beat is intentionally very weak (as if the third beat is simply held longer) or he is using a hemiola.

Anyway, there are a lot of little subtle things that make the piece more difficult and also more interesting. Also some things that I am weak at doing - like a diminished 7th chord in both hands that shifts up by a third over and over and over - ouch!

chopinoholic: (nice name, by the way, although I like to read it "shoppingaholic" :P) I've run into several passages in my pieces that required some serious fingering to make it work. You're doodling along just fine and BAM you get hit with this long tricky passage. Once I figured out the fingering I've had to do slow work with the metronome gradually increasing the tempo. Still nowhere near up to tempo yet, but hopefully I'll get there soon!

casinitaly: That makes sense. April is a long time, and I was eager to start on new music so I started mine right away. I probably should have waited but I didn't really have anything at the time to play and wanted to keep going. So, you should have no problems. Timing is very important!

Sam: Yikes on the diminished chords! Maybe memorizing them early on will help so you can just put the finger in the previous finger's spot and do it all visually. I had a piece like that and until I got the feel of it those passages went very slowly.

Lol, I've all on doin' this 'one' (pmsl) Just wondered how people felt, do folk prefer to participate in a complete themed recital, or is it of no relevance to folk x

In this case, since there isn't a "set" of piece like in previous recitals, but several different sets, I think it's OK to just get a taste of what Mr T has to offer the pianists of the world.
