People seem to move more nowadays than in times past. Part of the appeal of a digital piano is its portability.
But...I wonder how light one could make an acoustic piano and still have a typical acoustic piano sound?
Case material, plate, action parts...can somebody make an affordable vertical or grand, that can easily be loaded into a U-Haul trailer by two average people? That wouldn't cost a fortune?

I played a few spinets yesterday and was pretty dissatisfied with their tone, especially in the bass section. But, they do work! and maybe they qualify for 'typical acoustic piano' sound?

A Yamaha CP70 might fit that description if you're not too fussy about the tone.

But the discussion, while similar is not quite the same. Last time, we specifically talked about grands. This time we've added verticals, which normally weigh less than grands, anyway. And not spinets...I'm thinking full blow action and at least a 45-46" piano...Got to re-mulling this as I was perusing the lumbercore thread. Two people can easily move two hundred pounds with a decent set of castors, so that's your weight limit. Now, build me an acoustical vertical that can perform like a small grand and not weigh an ounce over 200 pounds. And not cost an arm and a leg.

How about lightening some of the non critical parts- i.e. parts that are irrelevant to the sound? Carbon fibre legs?
I think the point is that there probably wouldn't be much demand for a lightweight. I actually like the weight in my heavier furniture and pianos.
