One of my goals for 2013 was playing the organ of the St.Willibrorduschurch at Kloosterburen. Several times I played there during the summeropening....

Choralpartitas

Played also much of Haydn

Haydn

And of course some Bach

Aria&variationen Bach (BWV989)
(Harpsichord modus)

Thank you Johan B for saving our commitments in print/type
"Ah for 2013 my goals include:
1. practice 1-2 hours a day
2. memorize 3-5 pieces (they can be short easy pieces)
3. bring a level 6 (I guess it could be a 7 or 8 for that matter) piece up to speed
4. play scales with smoothness and speed
5. upload a piece for each e-cital
6. sight read more fluently
7. Go to Summerkeys and enjoy"

Some I achieved and others not as much. Certainly practiced AND enjoyed playing 1-2 hours a day...often more. Memorized sections but not whole pieces. Doubled my speed from last year. Played all the scales and learned the minor scales. Did not do all the e-citals but did upload a contribution to the Mendelssohn and 2 for Grieg. My sight reading is better and I experienced Summerkeys and gained from the experience. All in all a pretty good year.

Hi Johan - thanks for getting this thread started!

My goals last year were:

1. Play/practice every day (except when sick or away from home). CHECK!
2. Play longer pieces CHECK!
3. Further improve sight reading, reading in general CHECK!
4. Develop techniques which allow me to play faster pieces. (small) CHECK
5. Get started on the jazz and blues!!! ...TO DO

Things I'd like to do but which aren't 100% up to me...
a) play in a live recital - (DOES THE EUROPEAN PIANO PARTY COUNT? smile
b) play some duets - CHECK.

Well, not bad, not bad

I think I'm (finally) Learning to practice "better" not just "more".
Goals for this year:

1. Stick to MOYD (this will be my fifth year!)
2. focus more on technique and improved practice sessions
3. increase practice hours per week. (currently at about 8 per week, I'd like to get up to a full hour and a half a day at least. I think I can manage that.)
4. get Chopin Waltz in Amin post up to performance level
5. perform for audiences more - I have to actively seek out opportunities.
6. participate in at least 1 recital (again..does the European Piano Party count?: )
7. ...I'll put my jazz and blues work back on the list and get some ideas rolling about how to make it happen!
My teacher isn't very keen on this type of music in the lessons so I think I'll either have to insist or work on it independently... I'm not sure which route I'll take at the moment.

Good luck to everyone with their new goals!

Thanks Johan for remembering to check our goals!

Mine were:
1. practice every day (signed up MOYD)
2. learn 10 new pieces (I'm a very slow learner!)
3. improve sight-reading
4. learn how to record myself and submit something for one recital
5. play in front of a small public of friends (I have problem also with my teacher!)
6. practice on scales/ arpeggios at least once a week

And the results:
1. OK - I'll sign up to MOYD again because it worked
2. I did - not all the pieces perfectly polished and up to speed but I'll give myself a pass on this
3. I forgot to work on this until a month ago - since then I improved i little bit but it's not enough!
4. got a zoom recorder for Christmas and submitted on Ecco Fatto Cafè - next year I'll try a real e-cital
5. passed - I also played in a real recital (with children and teens)
6. failed for nine months, now I'm doing my homework

Overall, not too bad...

My 2013 goals:

1. Achieve RCM 7 technical proficiencyall = Mostly. I have all of the requirements learned, but I have held back the tempo until goals 2-4 were achieved. However, I worked scales and chords in all keys, not just the required ones.
2. Improve hand position: fix thumb, raise the bridge = Major improvement.
3. Continue working on relaxation and arm movement (in out, up down, side to side) = Major improvement
4. Well voiced chords and even attack = major improvement.
5. Sight read at grade 4 = achieved.
6. Play in all 4 AFB recitals = achieved, plus the Grieg recital and Chopin Mazurka recital
7. Post to the piano bar once a qtr. = I posted to the bar eight times.

Other 2013 achievements:

I played in a live recital for the first time since I was eleven years old, plus two piano parties, and the European Piano Party. As a result I am fairly confident playing for others. I practiced everyday, and will end up with over 1000 practice hours for the year. I don't know if this is an achievement, but I purchased a grand, which has seemed to accelerate my learning.

All in all, 2013 was a wonderful piano year for me!

Thanks Johan
Here's my goals and results

(1) force myself to record and play in front of others / recorded 4 pieces albeit it was done at the last minute. Played for others at my piano party, school studio classes, mid term, end of the semester recitals and at the monthly piano club meeting (first time in December)
(2) focus on playing musically / working on it every day. I think I made a progress in this department, at least I've been told by others.
(3) practice 2 hours a day / I completely sucked in this department. Lots is execuses. I'm simply too tired or sleepy at night. I can barely practice an hour. I may need to stop drinking wine before practice.

Both of these goals will likely be met this year as these are the two pieces I'm planning to summit to the summer and fall ABF recitals. Both of these pieces are in the polishing stage. I became obsessed with Chopin's op28 nr 24 prelude in February and managed to learn it from scratch and record it in time for the November recital. That detour worked out well for me so I feel like I did accomplish something even though not with the pieces I'd originally chosen.

I didn't post any goals for 2013, but I did do a lot that I set out to accomplish. I have many more goals for myself for the coming year - always moving on to the next project! I'll definitely be posting my 2014 goals when that thread pops up. This is such a neat idea!

Ouch, I had totally forgot this! Let's see...

- practice 4-5 days a week, at least 1 hour a day
I'm currently averaging 1 hour and a half 6 days a week smile

- start Alfred's AIO book 3 in February and finish it by the end of the year
Nope, I got half-way through and dropped it, but it was a good decision after all!

- practice sight reading once a week (ideally Bartok's Mikrokosmos I-IV)
I think I've done a bit more than that, but I only finished Mikrokosmos 1 (the others are way too hard to sight-read). I did Hannah Smith's book and Improve Your Sight-Reading level 1, plus other random stuff.

- I also have in mind to get an acoustic upright, but that might have to wait a bit more.
I got my Wally in September smile

Can't wait to set my goals for next year!

My 2013 piano goals:

1. Faithfully complete MOYD 2013 thumb
2. START and COMPLETE Alfred's Adult AIO Course Book 1 thumb
3. START Alfred's Adult AIO Course Book 2 thumb (started but dropped after starting with a teacher)
4. Journal my practices (accomplishments, struggles, pieces, page notes, hours, etc) thumb (excellent tool)
5. Upload selections as they are "mastered" (youtube or other site) thumb (AIO1 material)
6. Seek constructive criticism of my work AND accept what is offered to me so I can grow as a piano player thumb (hope to think I have done so with humility)
7. Submit at least one offering to ABF Recital thumb (believe it was May 2013 recital)
8. Take care of my piano, as it will take me to places I have always dreamed about... thumb (my magic carpet!)

The bonus was getting a teacher in September. My lesson is like therapy; I may go to the lesson a little stressed about what I did or did not accomplish for the week, but I always leave with a smile and a great feeling!

I really need to think about my goals for 2014. Honestly, I am a bit at a loss for specific goals. I need to really think about it over the course of the next week.

I did I little better than I thought before reviewing everything...although I didn't get them all. Plenty of room for improvement.

    Quote:
    1. Reading. Read something new every day, whether it is sight reading easier fare or slogging through a few measures of more advanced material, just keep reading. Continue with the Read/Sing/Play of Bach's Invention #8 as per the reading exercise suggested by one of our members.
Ran out of gas on invention 8 when recital crunch time intruded, didn't get every day but read on lots of days. Did more fake book reading/improv plus throw aways instead. Grade=B-

    2. Technique. Continue working on tension and relaxed concentration/focus. Continue speed work in scales. lots of improvement, but still have a ways to go. Last year I was kind of stuck on 70bpm playing 4 notes to the beat on my scales...up to 92 now, but been stuck again for a bit and working on the underlying tension holding things back. Grade=B+

    3. Practice habits. Continue MOYD at 2-3 hours a day. STOP practicing when it isn't working and do something else for a while. Reduce everything to smaller and smaller steps. GO SLOWER. I put the hours in, missing no days except travel away from home. Still have days I think are inefficient in retrospect. More focus and walk away when its not working still required. Grade=C

    4. Performance. Participate in my teacher's spring recital and host pre-recital "practice session" for the adult students. Submit more things to the piano bar or ABF recitals. Jam with one of my guitar-playing buddies. Got most of these done. Could have done a few more submissions and I never got the jamming session in. Grade B+

    5. Pieces. I think I may be better off not setting a time-related goal for getting to any particular piece of music.... I will get there when I'm ready. Despite my best intentions I had to constantantly check myself against setting artificial time-related limits/goals that I believe only screw up my learning process. Grade=D (I'd make it an F, but at least I'm aware that I do it)

    6. New this year. I have decided to start holding on to more of my pieces and will see if I can have a little more of a repertoire at this time next year. As the pieces get harder and time invested in each longer, it seems a shame to just let them go when completed to my teacher's satisfaction. She agrees and thinks it will be good for me. A handful of jazz standards and two or three of my harder classical pieces would be a good start and something to shoot for by year-end. I'm not sure how much time I will have to give to this effort, but it will come in the evenings, which I usually reserve for "playing".
Managed to retain three classical pieces, a jazz piece I already had retained last year, plus the revival of a jazz piece from a prior year. I have found I can let them slip for a week or two and they come back easier each time. Approach and schedule for keeping up could be more organized Grade=A-

Well, here's my 2013 with comments:

I'd like to average 2 hours/day of practice. Usually I don't make that specific a goal publically, but I made my goal of 1.5 hrs/day average last year, and I think this one is going to take some work. Whoops laugh I'm not going to make even 1.5 hours a day this year. So I missed this.

And I'd like to play Happy Birthday regularly smile It's so easy to forget, and then I botch it when I need it on the spur of the moment Hm. Didn't do this, either, but once when I was specifically playing a birthday party I practiced it, but it turned out they had a person who "always" starts "Happy Birthday" and it for sure wasn't in the key I had been practicing. So it wouldn't have worked out any way.

What I get from practicing: More musicality. More repertoire (I'm aiming for 2 hours of tunes from the late 1800s thru about 1946 one of these days. I have 2 hours of tunes, but they're in a broader category.) Learning tunes faster. More facility all over the piano. I can reach an octave in both hands fairly easily, which at one time I couldn't. More freedom to do variations (I can do rhythm variations more easily than I can do melody variation, or add frills - I'd like to be able to do more of all one of these days). More up-tempo. This was much better. Even without an increase in time. The practicing itself was just far more effective. My repertoire is for sure more solid, and closer to 2 hours. The tempo on several pieces is much better, and hasn't had any musicality sacrificed. There's at least one tune on which I regularly "improvise" parts, so it's coming.

And, ultimately, more gigs - pizza parlors anyone? I did add one more assisted living place fairly regularly. Maybe not quite ready for pizza parlors, but thought I'd aim for the farmers market in the spring this year.

So - I'm not disappointed, overall. I have a sneaking suspicion that 2 hours a day is more than my temperament will deal with laugh But it was a great goal. And when I did play, I played with much more effectiveness, so having the goal helped, I think.

    On to 2014.

Oh, and you all are such inspiration smile

    Cathy

    Hi there,

Did everybody evaluate his/her goals of 2013?

    Best regards,

I didn't write goals, but I had a major one. Back when I was self teaching I had a way of playing scales and individual notes of a melody (as opposed to chords) that hurt my hand. I knew it was wrong but didn't know how to fix it. I had messed up chords too, but since I played a lot less of them, this was easier to fix. My goal was to get at this. At one time my hands would go numb. I finally have a handle on it. It's major remediation because I was really stuck in what I was doing, but it's moving forward now.

A lot of things moved more slowly than expected, but they also seem to make a much greater difference.

    Keystring,

Very good that you fixed your problem. Next year all will do better. I am sure you will succeed.

    Best regards,

Oh this...of course I'd forgotten... grin

    My goals for 2013:

    - Buy a grand

Didn't yet...but still working on it...

    - Get my body into better shape so I can loose some of the tensions

I think I have made some improvement on this smile

    - Improve my memorization (to be more reliable)

I've learned to employ some techniques that help with this...Improved but still not really good...

    - Improve my concentration skills

Not much improvement really on this, but maybe a little...I was able to play a two page piece on my last lesson without getting distracted. And I think I have learned to accept my limitation a bit better.

    - Keep improving my touch and make it more even in quality

This one I feel I have achieved smile
Certainly not great but much better.

    As for repertoire:
    - At least 3 more Scarlatti sonatas

Only did two and haven't finished the 2nd one. But it's not only me to blame, my teacher has kept me really busy with other things.

    - At least one new Chopin piece, maybe 72-1 if teacher agrees

Didn't quite finish this one, but worked on it. Still get back to it occasionally, but memorizing the last page just hasn't happened.

    - Something totally different to what I have played so far

Did some Casella, which was definitely different smile

    - Keep improving some of the nice ones I have already played to the level that I can play them anytime without messing up

I really only had time to do this for one piece, but I do feel it is firmly implanted in my mind now smile

    1. Take part in four ABF recitals.
    Done. Plus two themed recitals.

    2. Learn 20 new pieces.
Done. I learnt 22 this year but I haven't remembered all of 'em.

    3. Do scales, arpeggios or broken chords every weekend.
Done for those weekends I've not taken off but I haven't felt the benefit of it. I often do double thirds during the week as well as at weekends (they're the only scales that work all five fingers) but I started the Presto from Beethoven's Sonata 10/3 recently and found a difficulty with double thirds.

    4. Add four new exercises from Clementi's Gradus.
Only added another two but no longer interested in this as a goal. I want to get technique from pieces now not from exercises.

    5. Keep checking in to the forum.
Done. And I'm still getting more benefit from here than I was from piano lessons on a week by week basis.
