I recently noticed something new on this forum. These annoying clickable "sharing" icons at the bottom of the page. Is this something Frank allowed here or is it yet another parasitic invasion by Google or IE. I suppose I should ignore them but I'm still curious if it's seen by everyone or just on my machine. My whole browser experience is different lately and I can't seem to revert it to the former state it had before. As I barked a couple days back...I hate computer/social media technology and the way it's forced upon me at times.

Clickable 'sharing' buttons? Can you post a picture? I don't see them here (firefox) but I'm blind for advertisments

I never noticed them until you pointed them out in your post. I'm no fan of social media (at all) either, but these seem pretty unobtrusive to me.
However, something has indeed changed on the forums here lately. -- The text is no longer centered. That's a plus too.

I just noticed them because of your post ..... I think I'd have seen them before so I am guessing they are new.
I believe you'd have to add them in, I don't think that they'd be automatic by Google....though I could be wrong.
Let's not forget that for Frank this is not just a fun hobby - it is a big part of his livelihood - so the more publicity he gets for PW, the better!

I also saw piano world posting of 2014 European piano party in his FB post. I had a mixed feeling about that too.

I've got them to. Not at all surprised. If it's not on everything yet, it will be soon.

Social Media: Don't like you say? What do you think this is? No offense RUSS but, I think it's a moderated forum for piano enthusiasts as apposed to an inane place where anyone can post not only their various interests but what their adorable 2 year old spit out at breakfast this am, or what they and their bffs had for lunch, how much weight they have lost/gained, their new car, the @nu$ clinching adventures of their failed marriages ad nauseum. As if the collective world had any interest in it. I also don't see a "like" or "share" button for this forum on every web site I visit. Like whatever you want, just don't assume I'll like it as well. Cheers, Ms Grinch Media Clutter is ugly and sharing it all everywhere is vanity insanity IMO.

I'm open minded to all points of view. I had a friend post me on my personal email and said, "If it were not for social media I wouldn't have any kind of social life at all". Now you have to realize; this guy is stuck at home having to taker care of his sick wife. He can't get out to socialize with his friends the way he would like to. For those people I'd say, "it's probably a good thing".

I think there are definite pros to social media - but there are some pretty heavy cons too .
Russ, for your friend - and for lots of people I know who can't get out the way they'd like - it can be great.
For folks who live far from family and long time friends, it can be a true joy....catching up on news, seeing photos, just sharing little day to day things that let you close the distance - it's wonderful to have these tools. When I first moved to Italy no one in my family even had email! Yesterday I skyped with everyone and we opened our gifts together- it was fabulous!
...but it is easy to get wrapped up in it and I find it disheartening to go out for an evening and see everyone looking at their cell phones - to see couples in a romantic restaurant..each looking at a cell phone, to hear that at a recent family reunion I coulnd't make, half the folks spent more time looking at the cell phone rather than truly connect with the folks right in front of them.
I fear that a large portion of the younger generation is growing up with a lack of socializing skills - and some of the older generation is losing hold of theirs!
Ah well, moderation in everything is the key, right?

Oh yes, it's pathetic and guess what? I'm just a guilty, ha ha ha!, but it's not very funny either. What have we become? I took my 32 year old daughter out to lunch one day and here we're sitting in the restaurant and she's texting away on her smartphone to someone on Facebook. I say, "Kim ah aha Kim".... Yes Dad? "Can't that wait so we can talk"? Sue Dad, I'll send you a text here in just one minute! She was kidding, of course....

@cas Well you and RUSS covered almost all I was thinking. I agree that it can be useful and also destructive. I have seen all of what you mention. I suspect there are some who should have their cell phones surgically removed. My point was not to debate the merit or lack of merit of social media but to put on my bitch hat about having it forced into every web site I visit. Also I'm afraid by having these links so ubiquitous that too much "sharing" will make places like our cozy little PW world more attractive to trolls, @$$hats and shi*-stirrers in general. I would truly hate that as this is such a friendly non-confrontational place to spend time and learn, and for the most part, always on topic. Piano stuff! It's the reason I joined here and never looked at faceplacebook, never tweeted, don't care a bit about having 45,878 followers, don't wanna be linkedin, don't have enough time for 2500 "friends", etc. However I suspect it's good deal like usenet insert :::full body shudder::: I think it isolates folks from real life relationships and it's just sad. /rant

The icons on the bottom of the "Forum List" page now have counters on some of the icons. I'm not sure how sharing is possible since we aren't supposed to quote from posts on the forum. How is posting a photographed page of the forum on facebook not quoting from the forum? I guess this is just a sign of the times. I feel like I have control of what I post and like on facebook. Now I will have to be careful here too. I kind of liked it when I was sure PW was private.

Seriously, I still have no clue... What is the text on the buttons? Is it above or below the bottom banner ("Benches, Cushions & Lamps", "PianoSuppliers.com" and similar)?

I first thought it was just for connecting to a forum page but it does seem to allow sharing of a specific thread. I'm not terribly thrilled about that.
I have asked for clarification.

Hover over them and they have text such as tweet, linkedin, pinterest, facebook, etc. The last one on the right is "more", that one will list about 30-40 more places to share. It's sick I tell ya .

I guess we have to remember that the websites we visit are usually free or donations such as this one. Adverts and sharing are inextricably linked these days. I was on facebook for a month or so. Started to get emails from total strangers, mostly with business "interests" to put it charitably. So I never press nowt . . . . you used to be able to get free stuff like video editors, video grabbers, etc. Try it now and your computer throws up a new search engine, and your settings are all changed. Takes some clearing too! I`ll settle for the "adverts . "

I don't participate actively in other social media, but don't have any problem with the sharing links.
