I'm a beginner so please be kind. I'm not sure how to interpret the notes in the treble clef with the upper eighth note stems connected with lower sixteenth note stems. Please enlighten me. Thanks

Hi Delphian, the notation is drawn that way to emphasize the voicing of the melody. In other words, the notes with the upward pointing eighth note stems carry the melody of the piece, whereas the alternating sixteenth notes are just part of the, um, whatever you call the part that's not the main melody. laugh

If I were playing that measure, I'd emphasize ever so slightly those eighth notes and make the alternating notes less prominent.

There are two voices/melody lines:

1. the notes with upward stems , all eight-notes.
2. The notes with downward stems, all 16th notes.

The two melody lines share notes. These are the notes that have two stems attached to them
