I plan to buy a Kawai.

K3 $5000 or so
K5 $6500 or so

Dealer suggest to buy K3, and the difference between K3 and K5 isn't worth $1500. How's your professional's opinion?

I like both piano, and could afford the higher price, but still want to save as much money as I could

After looking at both pianos, I bought a K3 last year and have been very happy. I can't say I missed anything on the K5.

The K5 is definitely nicer - but not hugely so.

I kinda of looked at it like the K5 was a deluxe K3. Sort of like an Accord with a V6 and leather seats!

If this is to be your "last" piano, maybe go for the K5.

You will not be sorry with the K3 though.

(not exactly a professional opinion!)

No big differences from a technical/engineering standpoint. Both models have carbon/abs actions, use iron pellets instead of lead to balance the keys, tune easily, seem to stabilize fairly quickly, and have a nice tone.

You'll get a nicer, truer sounding bass on the taller K-5. Only you can decide whether or not it's worth the extra $.

With a 1500 difference, and since you say you can afford it, I think you will be happier with the K-5. I played them both several times several months ago when I was shopping. I preferred the K-5 across the keyboard, not just in the bass. To me, it had a more distinctive voice.

Play them several times before you decide. The K-3 may still appeal to you more, but challenge them both with your favorite pieces.

Go with K-5.

I originally bought a K-25 (similar to K-3) and had it for a few months. Then I tried a K-50 (similar to K-5) in a piano store and really noticed the difference in the tone.. particularly the bass. It consumed me, and I ended up taking advantage of the full trade-in on the K-25 for a K-50. No regrets.

I was rather new to pianos and I feel I needed the time at home on the K-25 to fully appreciate the difference in tone. There are other factors too: nicer cabinent, extra back post, NEOTEX keys(I prefer the feel of).
