You've got to be kidding me here Wind. This has no similarity to the original I-IV-V chords whatsoever. Especially when you get to the solo. But it is a testament to the strength of the melody that your ear thinks it is close to the same. The chords are posted up top.

I played a couple of tunes with John Hebert, down at the local club where I used to play quite a bit.

wee, I could barely hear the left hand harmony at all. if it was a clear sound quality I probably would. and the singer's voice overpowers your playing.

I'm sure you did some good reharm. Just a matter of sound that I can't hear it, not my ears missing it.

However I will be overseas during Week 1 and Week 2.

I posted my submission, which is one chorus of Just Friends.
I'll send you a pm Cus. Others can see it in the fb group.

Nice Knots! Too short though. Amazing LH you got there. I can't do that.

Hi JW,
The guy that organizes this puts a few restrictions. This week, you get one chorus only, on Just Friends. I think it's cool because you get to hear a lot of players and not sit through Sonny Rollins type of solos smile
Lots of trumpet players though. Many guys I know have found that group already, some really great dc players. And overall great players around the world. Most really burn actually. I'm also surprised tht most people play with no accompniement. It's one thing for us pianist, but it's another thing for a sax player ...
Not much piano representation there, we need you guys.

Thanks for the nice comment about the LH. I'm kind of glad it's only one chorus :-)

Well I don't do videos...I would have had no problem with a recording though. Just Friends has a short form though at a fast tempo so you'd have to max your ideas without buildup. Maybe the way to do it is just keep playing and then take a one chorus excerpt.

BTW I have no occasion to use the LH in walking bass so it takes a very low position in my practice regimen. So it will likely be undeveloped for years to come. Thus, I'm impressed to see it.

Whatever works I guess. The moderator's rule I think is just there to keep submissions really short. I don't know if you checked out some but some real monsters on there. Also you are allowed a single post per week, which effectively removes any form spam.

Anyway, if you wanted to participate, you could do video on FB with a still image instead of showing yourself, or just the hands, or whatever. From a privacy point of view, you'd be still fine I see. I gave up my privacy a few years back. Now that Chris and I are "real buddies". Can you believe it ;-)

I think it's kind of cool to have a weekly challenge. I put mine up Tuesday evening I think, didn't want to spend more time than that. Plus I had not played Just Friends in a long time so it's a good refresher. I ran in into a few keys and picked the easiest :-). There's another piano player in there that did a killer stride version and I think he also played it in F.

Also look for the Gary Burton class on coursera that many of us did last year. It's kind of the same concept actually.

If the FB link doesn't work, here's the take on YT:

Hi - hope you don't mind me jumping in here. I pop by here once in a while and follow the threads. I followed the link to jamoftheweek that Knotty posted and really enjoyed listening, there are some fine players on there and some very good young jazz trumpet players, the music is in safe hands.

I really liked both your versions (Knotty & Chrisbell)and true to jazz they are both totaly different.

The FB page and Knotty's submission inpired me to have a go, haven't played Just Friends before on the Piano as far as I can remember so had a few runs through last night and came up with a version this morning. I am not quiet ready to post to Facebook and anyway I got carried away and recorded a couple of choruses :-)

On the technical side my web cam only records to one channel for some reason so its the not the best video production ever.
