Hi Pianoworld,

Within the past year I've gotten very much into composition. I'm a piano major, so every thing I've written so far has been for piano- mainly because I don't understand how other instruments should sound by themselves or in an orchestra.

I also realized that a lot of what I write sounds like it would be better if orchestrated, so there's my problem. I'm afraid to write anything down for a different instrument if I only know how to think as a pianist.

In short, I wanted to see if anyone could link a website explaining each instruments' best use in ensemble, or if anyone could tell me from their own experience composing.

Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Since you're looking for a website (and presumibly a free one) there you go: http://www.northernsounds.com/forum...-line?s=c29b9d71dfa06db38ac979c4228953e1

It certainly is outdated, but for a beginner, if you remember that there's lots more to learn, it's more than ok! smile

Have a blast and happy new year from Europe!
