The New Year's Eve concert with Lang Lang playing Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.3 is due to start in an hour's time. Sir Simon Rattle conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker, and there is some 'light classical' music on the menu too. It's free to watch via www.digitalconcerthall.com

I noticed there wasn't much time spent between Astoria or Hamburg models....

I noticed there wasn't much time spent between Astoria or Hamburg models.... ???? - The performance was on a Hamburg-D. That long pause with all of the lift business was interminable.

I had to go to work, so I missed the concert. But I believe that the video is being edited now and will be available to see again soon - can't wait! Presumably, the lifting of the piano will be edited out. I well remember the occasion several years ago when the lift in a Proms concert got stuck, and the poor piano was in limbo, half-way beneath the platform, for half an hour. The BBC continuity announcer somehow managed to keep the Radio 3 listeners entertained with his very dry wit for the duration......

It’s shamelessly exhibitionistic, it’s improbably precise and it looks pretty dangerous from the outside.

Wimpiano - Yep, the video was pretty much what I thought of the review. And it was nothing but a "Review" as it offered no analysis or criticism, whatsoever.
ToyBoy - When does a vague question such as "What is the music actually saying?" mean anything? If the author had offered an opinion, and expressed how Lang Lang either met or missed expectations, there might have been something more than lip-flapping.
I assume that the reviewer would have preferred a bubble filled concert of endless Strauss waltzes rather than Prokofiev, Brahms, and Hindemith. Last Christmas I was in Vienna and heard the New Year's concert at the Musikverein and it was delightful! However, once is enough. I prefer Sir Simon's approach to programing.
