I recently got an old Yamaha P80 and am starting to play on it and really like it.

I do most of my playing at night with the headphones, but I do want the option to hear some sound without headphones from time to time.

The P80 doesn't have any built-in speakers, so I understand I need to buy a "powered monitor" to hear the sound.

I just need something nice and simple for home use.. and relatively inexpensive... no gigging, and no bothering the neighbors.. but would like good sound reproduction.

I was looking on Amazon, and found these two options:

Pair of Behringer MS16's. Only $79 on Amazon:

And a pair of Yamaha MSP3s: A bit mroe at $149 for the pair.

Any comments on these or other suggestions?

Thanks.

Michael

Mike, be careful when shopping studio monitors. Decent ones are usually sold separately - not as a pair. Yamaha MSP3 are nice but $144 each.

If you want a pair for $149 price range maybe look at the next step up on the Beringer or Alesis. Some folks in the forum with similar situation as you have used multimedia speakers such as Logitech for around $100 and seemed pleased.

I used to use computer speakers with my P80 (Logitech x-230 IIRC). They don't exactly have a flat response (the bass tends to be exaggerated, for example) but they are cheap, self-powered, and sound pleasing. Maybe some slightly higher end computer speakers would do in a pinch since it sounds like perfection is not the goal here.

I later replaced them with expensive studio monitors. While the latter much more accurately reflected the sounds coming out of the piano I didn't actually find them much more pleasing. Sad story.

I have a pair of Behringer MS40 speakers. They're about as big as you'd want for "computer speakers". They do a decent job, for their size and cost. Better than the speakers in my PX-350.

The MS16's will be smaller, and lower-powered. They should be OK, probably as good as many built-in loudspeakers.

I tried some Logitech speakers, "satellites plus woofer" configuration. The highs and lows were great, but the midrange was missing.

The problem is getting enough bass, with small woofers. Think about the size of an acoustic piano's soundboard -- now think about how far a small loudspeaker cone would have to move, to displace an equal volume of air.

I finally gave in to temptation, and bought a powered PA speaker with an 8" woofer and horn-loaded tweeter. That one is big enough, IMHO.

. Charles

PS -- there is a coterie who really like the Logitech Z-2300 speakers, which are no longer made. If you can find a used set, they might be worth looking at.
