I bought Synthogy's Ivory II American Concert D and I love it. Except that I sometimes hear loud thumping noises when I play notes, especially when I play una corda.

When I play on an actual piano, I don't really hear (or notice) it that much.

I've already tried turning the key noise down to -24 dB, but that didn't seem to help.

Is this normal? Can I do something about it?

I've recorded this as an example (most noticeable around 0:50)

That could be pedal noise. Does this piano software have a pedal noise and/or damper noise setting? Mine does. I turn it off.

Yes, the noise at around :50 is in fact the pedal which you can turn off or lower if you do not wish to hear it on the left side of the Program window.

Playing a dryly recorded sampled piano is like sticking your ears 10cm from the strings so that hammer noises are exaggerated (also perhaps due to the proximity effect of microphones). I'd suggest an 80Hz lowpass filter or EQing down the bass. Your recording sounds fine on my bass-light headphones.

If it's not pedal noise, it sounds like the clunk of the key/hammer falling back to rest when you lift off the key. If you've turned that off as well there could be a bug.

Have you contacted Support yet?

Greg.

I have Ivory II American Concert D and just tried reproducing the noise on your recording. It is almost certainly key noise. I don't hear it at my regular setting for Key Noise (0.0 dB), but if I turn it up to 7.0 dB it sounds about the same as your recording.

What is your current Key Noise Setting?

My current Key Noise setting is set to -24 dB. I thought it might reduce the key noise but apparently it doesn't work that way.

Are you saying that the Key Noise knob has no effect on what you hear? It most certainly should. It does here, very noticeably.

If the Key Noise setting does make some difference, but not enough, the only thing I can think of is that somehow Ivory II is receiving only rather low MIDI values from you keyboard. As you boost the overall audio signal to compensate this would also boost the key noise. Do you have your keyboard's sensitivity set to normal/linear? Do the the low and high keyboard setting on the Sessions page look something like 6 and 110 or so, and does the graph look fairly linear?
