Hello guys,

I've been wanting to play the piano for a while now and I really can't afford a digital piano, even a cheap casio px-150.
I'm already playing the saxophone.

I can spend around 200 (I live in France) but with that much money I can't have a digital piano, even used but I've been looking to midi controllers and some of them look quite good on the paper.

I'm talking about the Fatar/Studiologic SL-990 for example. It can be found for 200 on the internet.

My questions are :

Can I find with this kind of keyboard the feeling of a 600 digital piano's keyboard? I don't care much for the speakers as I have a desktop PC with speakers.

In the case where the keyboard on these midi controllers is good, will there be latency? I mean, I want to be able to play the piano too.

200 euros should get you a used fairly decent keyboard like a P105 Yam. or the Casio you mentioned. Bearing in mind Digital pianos will usually have long and useful lives, you should be able to pick up an older, decent piano. Mind you, I`m speaking as a UK-ite . . .

Nope, it really can't. In my area, the only used digital pianos are 400/500 min and they are old. I wouldnt mind an old dp but not for that price.
An example : the lowest 88 dp is 400 and it's a casio px 110...

I am no expert but I do not think the midi-controller will have a significant effect on latency. That will be dependent upon what you connect the controller to and what you are going to use for your sound engine.

Have you considered saving a bit longer so you can afford a regular digital piano/keyboard ? I usually find that when I try for real cheap I end up with junk ... just wasting my money.

What about renting? Many piano stores in the US have a rental policy that goes something like this: you pay a monthly fee of about $50 for 6 months for a digital piano. After the 6 months are up, your rent payments thus far go towards the purchase of a new digital or acoustic.

It's kind of like a rent-to-own although usually you don't buy the rental piano.

Otherwise, I second the idea that you continue to save your money so that you can buy the instrument you want. If you use 200 euro now to get a subpar instrument like a cheap midi controller, you will want to upgrade very soon, so that 200 goes to waste when it could go towards a real digital piano.

I like midi controllers!

After several DP experiences, actually I have only one controller (VPC1) and a notebook and I'm very satisfied.

Fatar/Studiologic SL-990 (both xp and pro) has a very nice keybed. You can start with that and then swap to a better one in next future without losing much money.

But what will midi controller controll?!
