I have a client who has moved from a moist climate area to a dry one. Apart from climate control issues, they are asking me how soon after the move they can have their piano tuned? It has basically been 1 month since the move.

Thank you.

One month sounds good to me. I suggest at least one week, Two weeks is better, a month is great. Who wants to play an out of tune piano any longer than need be?

Tune now and then check in 90 days.

To answer your question entails knowing the general level of humidity change between the two locations.

In general moving from dry to wet needs much less tuning delay to allow for acclimatization. This is because wood and felt take on humidity much quicker than they give it up. I use a factor of five to judge this. It takes five times longer to reduce humidity by 20% than it takes for it to increase 20%.

If the humidity in the new location is average 30% drier-I would allow six weeks minimum if possible.

What Ed said, plus, if it's a drastic reduction in RH, expect temporary issues with tuning stability.

Maybe a climate control system in this piano's future?

The complete acclimatization can take up to and over one year. I have seen this in pianos which I have moved form one continent to another. During this time, the piano will need more tunings than after complete stabilization, perhaps three tunings spaced 6 months. Now is the right time for the first tuning. Why should the client suffer an out of tune piano?
