Just came across this piano on eBay- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-Z1-ONL...W-/170812872573

It's a Yamaha Z1. I have no plans to buy it as I relatively recently acquired a new grand, but I am interested to see if anyone knows or has any information on this model? There doesn't seem to be any information about it on the net.

Also, it has a rather interesting design!

never heard of that but from the frame it looks the same as one of the baby grands, like the A1 I think it was, that was being made around the late 1990s.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the music desk and legs, since they aren't really part of the musical design of the piano, but the fact it only has two pedals is quite interesting if it really is only 8 years old.

I actually think the design would hinder sound quality! Typically people don't have the lid open when just at home practicing, or teaching, etc. however they do have the front half of the lid opened to gain access to the music desk, this opening does allow a substantial amount of sound out and it greatly improves the clarity of sound compared to the piano being fully closed up (most noticeable in the treble). The design of this Yamaha Z1, with the lid down, is in effect the same as a playing a regular grand fully closed up! So to get a nice clear sound from this piano you would need to at least have the lid on the half stick.

That's just my thoughts on the design...

Something interesting though about the legs on a grand piano, is that they actually do alter the sound! Check out Justin Elliot's grand piano leg designs and the effect they have on the piano's sound- quite fascinating!
