Well the Bechstein B arrived on Wednesday. The music room is being replastered. This should have been completed before delivery but things didn't work out. I am a bit worried about the humidity caused by the plaster drying out but am doing what I can.

I am very, very happy with the piano. I need to get the case repolished at some time. The marks are much worse than can be covered up with my paint pen! Anyway that can wait. With the room being bare it sounds like a brass band rather than a piano but that will go once I have tweaked the acoustics.

Don't ask for photos yet. I will post some when I get the room closer to being finished.

Congratulations!

(OK, I won't ask about what I shouldn't ask about, BUT ...)

Moving it in was very easy. It was on a piano board. There is so much snow they skidded it in like a sleigh.

Mazel tov! I know you've been working on this plan for a quite a while! I hope the piano is everything you expected it to be, and that it brings you years of enjoyment.

Yeah, there's a lot of water in real wet-wall plaster. Run fans to reduce the concentration in the room, aim them at closed windows to prevent condensation. Give it at least a month to stabilize before you pay to tune it.

Retsacnal, thank you. I am a poor man and can't afford mistakes which is why I sometimes spend a long time planning things. If it lasts 20 years I shall be happy. If I last 20 years I shall be completely amazed.

Wimpiano, yes it doesn't sound bad. I am very, very happy with the deal. Just need to get the case sorted out but that is not urgent.

Congrats on the piano! And, finishing up the music room!

When I enclosed my attached garage/car-port (my music room) I bought a baby grand piano before I completely finished the project. Things still worked out and the music room turned out great.

All the best!

I took the plunge. Some areas of the cabinet were matt black, others were a sort of dirty grey. I got it all black and then sprayed with aerosol lacquer. I worked on the assumption that if I had to get in an expert he would start by stripping off all the existing finish so I had nothing to lose.

The result has surprised me. It really is entirely good enough. I doubt if most people could tell where Bechstein finish finishes and Philip's aerosol lacquer begins. Anyway I am completely happy with it and that is all that matters. A rattle can of lacquer is certainly a cheap alternative.

I am altering this posting because my previous version caused offence. I had meant none and apologise unreservedly for the grossness of my language in attempting humour.

Nevermind the finish, just call it 'shabby chic' and get on with the music and merriment!

It plays better than it looks, for sure.

Trouble is I am here for only one more week then I shall be back to my Chinese digital!

Exactly!

When I first looked at the piano we bought, I thought it might need refinishing, but in the end I really like its aged appearance.

As some of you know I live in Sichuan but the Bechstein is in my house in Bulgaria. The room is black and white so I wondered about a stuffed panda somewhere in there. (Not a real one of course). That way there would be a black and white hint of Sichuan in there.
