We are planning to get a piano for our two sub age 5 grandsons. They both see to be bright and quite musically inclined. We believe that one of the best ways to keep a student on track with the piano is to have an instrument that will play quality music. With that in mind, and since their house does not easily accept a grand, we are thinking that the model 6000 Baldwin may be a great choice. I would appreciate any thoughts on that topic.
We have seen one a couple of hours away for $2500. It is reported to be vintage 1988 and seems to be in excellent condition. The price includes moving and a tuning at the destination. How is this price in the current market.
Since the piano is being seen be someone before we get there, it may be sold to them first. If this is so, how likely are we to find a piano like this?

Thanks for your observations.

I think, if it is as you describe, that it is a very good deal. The 6000e was a VERY popular instrument. It is one of the few that have been re-manufactured by the new Baldwin Piano Co. It has a new designation as a model B252.

The 6000 was a very nice piano in 1988. make sure it is examined by a professional piano technician before tasking the plunge.

The Model 6000 was/is a rather unique piano. Basically a well made piano it is also unusual in that it has a quite different strike point ratio (SPR)through the bass.

Most pianos have a SPR of approximately 1/14th to 1/16th (of the speaking length) at C-88 and ends up at something around 1/8th somewhere between about F-33 and F-45. (There are no hard and fast rules for this; only some generalities.) From there on down it remains around 1/8th.

In the Model 6000 the SPR continues to change ending up at 1/5th of the speaking length at A-1. While I make no judgment on this either way it is different. Some people don't notice any particular tone difference between the Model 6000 and any other piano of similar size. Others love the difference and still others hate it.

As I said, they are basically well-made pianos and the price seems about right but I'd suggest playing and listening to the piano before you decide.
