Yes. I get it ready for recital / recording. Record. Then I'm done with the piece. You can keep it playing but if there's nothing to improve anymore it only starts sounding worse... And if there are things to improve, it wasn't yet ready for recording?

There is always something else to improve. Doesn't mean it can be done though. And things do tend to deteriorate for me after I reach a certain point, not getting better, but worse. Then its time to set it aside and possibly come back to it later.

I would guess this is more true of the one piece (or two or three) at a time pianists.

For those that build repertoire, hopefully, all of the old pieces in the catalog can be performed at a decent level at any time, perhaps with five minutes of brush up. This is not to say totally top notch for that person, but good enough for sharing live or on a recording.

And of course for pros (vs. beginners), are almost always ready to go. Studio musicians are ready to go at any time with new sheet music, with the obvious caveat that they are mostly playing pop tunes or movie scores, not classical masterpieces.

My best performance has always been the one that comes immediately AFTER the one I recorded and submitted!

Seriously, it's true. And that drives me nuts. Nuts to the point that once I get a decent recording, I purposely leave everything on 'record' and do it again. But of course, that doesn't work.

But turning the recorder 'off' seems to work wonders in producing an exceptional performance....that didn't get recorded.

This is why I throw things and swear like a sailor.

Piano really is a great activity for the whole family! smile
