For those who are interested in entering Van Cliburn Outstanding Amateur Competition, the year has been changed to 2016 due to the new Youth Division. Now they have 4 year cycle.

1st year (2013 ) - Prof Competition
2nd year (2014) - No Competition
3rd year (2015) - Youth Competition (13 to 17)
4th year (2016)- Amateur Competition (35 and older)

Therefore, we have one extra year to prepare.

Hey! Thanks for telling us Ronald! I would have been too young the year it was previously scheduled for, but now I'll just barely be old enough smile As to whether I'll be good enough...

I have a good friend who would have been in the same boat like you if they had the competition in 2015.
I think the competitors of VC Amateur are very good pianists.

Regards,
Ron

They should add a "Seniors" event to fill the blank year in the cycle.

Not that it means anything to me... smile

Thanks for posting it, Ronald!
Good to know.
(How do you know? I'm not seeing it anywhere.)

And BTW I can sure use the extra year. ha
I've lost about a year and a half to this-that-and-the-other.

Also, the amateur Chopin will probably be in 2015 and I think it's better anyway to have those in separate years.

Hi Mark, Here is the link....Enjoy

http://www.theaterjones.com/ntx/news/20140128100212/2014-01-28/Cliburn-Adds-Youth-Competition

My friend whose daughter is really into piano is going to enter the Youth division, and she sent the link to me. People who belong to the Piano club in NY have known about this though.

BTW, another little wrinkle: Assuming that they mean "summer" literally (I realize that in Texas maybe the whole year is called summer) ha ....the amateur competition will be a little later in the year than before -- apparently 3-4 weeks later. This doesn't matter to anyone except us who will be trying to be in it: It affects our planning of other things, and maybe what clothing we plan to bring. grin

The answer is clear, if perhaps unfortunate. grin

(You'd have to think of doing the 'real' competition!)

Has anyone here attempted the Van Cliburn Amateur?

I know the criteria is that music is not your main source of employment/income but the winners surely are at a professional level and are often college graduates and/or have extensive performance experience.

Yes, several of us have been there (at least once). You are right about the winners...many have been Concert Pianists but are retired, some have been in major Competitions that are NOT for Amateurs. The level of the finalists is very high.

My piano friend who lives in NY area (including NJ)belongs to this piano club. He said that you belong to this club too, but he never saw you in their monthly recital. This morning I sent an e-mail to him and told him about the change. He said he already knew about this from the piano club people.

I guess this is just a thing of vocabulary.
I imagine there are lots of piano clubs in NY -- there's no "the" piano club -- and it seems you might be talking about a club that I don't even know I'm a member of. ha

But it's all good.
We play the piano, we're happy, and I'm glad to know that the Cliburn will be doing the amateur competition again.

(I never take anything for granted.) smile

This is funny.

There's no such thing, at least not that I'm aware of. I guess you're talking about one that used to meet about once a month, but that hasn't happened for years, for various reasons, and I don't think that group thinks of itself as a group any more. But whatever....anyway now at least I probably know what you're talking about -- although I doubt that most of those other people know this.

I'm glad you enabled us to know. smile

Hhmmm......every time I talk to my friend, he always said that he was going to play this or that at that particular month of the piano group meeting.
Therefore, I assume that there must be an active piano group that gets together every month. The group was organized by a lady. The lady determines whether you will be allowed to play in their big concert. They charge money for their big concert. Does it ring a bell now?

Not this one. The one that I was talking about is organized by Elena Leonova.

Yes -- and it's a different one than I thought you meant before. I haven't heard of the group for some time, dropped out of it long before that (was in it just briefly), and didn't know if they were still going on.
