Is a tone generator a reliable pitch source for setting A440 on a piano? Is it allowed on the RPT exam?

If it's a reliable tone generator, it's functionally the same as a tuning fork, so yes. I'd wager it's acceptable.

If you have a smart phone you can find A-440 on YouTube. If it is from a crystal source this is probably better than a tone generator. If the tone generator has a period average frequency counter with it that would provide accuracy.

For the exam, no matter which source you use, I would suggest asking to have it checked with whatever ETD they will be using to check your A4.

No need adding variables to the situation that may affect your mark unfavourably.

For my test, I found that my fork was 0.7 cents sharp, (after filing and calibrating it to my friend's Cybertuner, which he swore was accurate) but if I held it in my hand for a minute, it was bang on. So that's what I did.

1.4 cents is a fail, so 0.7 cents sharp with a 0.7 cents sharp fork, would have been a fail for me in that situation, where 0.7 cents sharp would have been 100% using an accurate source.
