I don't do it that way. I carry 1 pound rolls in an airtight case in my car. It's more economical in the long run, but is pretty expensive initially.
I don't see why using that string kit wouldn't work, though.
Come to think of it, if you learn to tie strings, that string assortment would be perfect and could last a long time. Most of the time, I either tie or short loop broken strings.

In the field, 1/3 lb reels (with brake) in a moisture-proof case. All sizes. A good micrometer is fine. I prefer a digital read. There are nice wire gauges as well. Best wishes.

I carry something like that, but I have 2-3 of each size since I keep on running into pianos with more than one string broken more often than not of the same size.

Carrying a pound of each size is the better way to go unless you're walking and taking the subway around the city.

I buy 1 pound rolls and carry it that way. Those individual packs would drive me crazy, trying to keep all sizes refiled. Also, what if I make a mistake installing and need another piece? (Not that I make mistakes smile Why not buy 1/3 pound rolls and make your own assortment..? That way you would not have to order and pay shipping each time you replaced a string.

I buy 1 pound reels and the metal clips that are available for wire. I put enough wire for several strings on the clips, place them in manila envelopes with the size marked plainly on them, put them in plastic bags to keep them dry, and carry that in my carry bag. I especially keep 13-16 at hand, as they are the sizes that break most often. As I once remarked, the strings at the top range of the piano are the longest with respect to the pitch, so they are the most likely to break.

I often have had to replace strings when time is of the essence: when running out to get a string means the audience has to wait 10 or 15 minutes before they can come in.
