I went to the Steinway store a few days ago and noticed different Steinway music racks for older vs newer Steinways. The saleslady took me around the store, letting me try out new ones, and then let me try out a Steinway B that was used in a venue somewhere. She said it was older, like 2009 or something, and there was the difference. I found that the newer Steinways have a music desk that "grooved outward", whereas the older one "grooved inward", if you know what I mean. Did they change the music desks sometime between, say, 2009 and now? I'm curious to hear your observations.

The newer NY Steinway desks that I have seen no longer have the fine "comb" ridges that help hold the music from slipping off. The ridges now are rounded.

It is a lot simpler to apply and rub out finishes when all the wood has no sharp edges. When applying finish materials to a sharp edge the surface tension exerted during drying pulls the material away from the edge. And when you polish the top coats what little finish is there gets rubbed away very quickly.

The biggest change that I have noticed is that the desks now have stops that give them several adjustable angles.

The Hamburg ones give a richer, more mellow tone to the instrument.

(Yes, Marty, I am joking).

It's much easier to bash a Steinway than it is to play one.

I think Noam should have said this a joke. It would be more appropriate given his conditions, IMO.

Hahaha. The Hamburg music rack is thick, heavy and blocks the sound alot more than the NY model.
Is sheet music alot heavier in Europe? This music rack can hold 2 tons!

What BDB said. I think it was around 2011.

Thats why I bother to take it off the piano every once and awhile.

Steinway has made several cosmetic changes over the last few years, including the music desk.

The one that caught me by surprise was the high gloss finish on the fallboard of otherwise satin ebony pianos. Took me a while to get used to it, but I've decided I like both the idea (I was told it discourages fingernail digs) and the look.

Larry.

I've seen the new rack (for NY Steinway) but I'm not sure its any smaller or does anything to allow the pianist to hear the sound any better. I would image the open style like on the Stewart might work better.
