Hi everybody !
Does anyone knows good funk keyboard methods?
books, dvds, online lessons, etc.
funk artist partitions or funk grooves/riffs can make the deal !

Thank you !

One of the best things to do is to listen to lots of funky stuff, I think. You could probably cover the whole field just by watching and listening to Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of Chic. Masters of the art.

Probably you've already done that, in which case my apologies.

Yes. Sometimes it's less easy to know what to do on 'keyboard' parts, (I like playing basses most - but from the keyboard). For piano and keyboards there's always Stevie Wonder and Billy Preston.

As a matter of fact, I'm just trying to sort out a cover or 'Jesus Children of America'. I had it all worked out when I was cycling home. Now I've done the washing up, I've forgotten what the big deal about the bass line was.

These things are sent to try us.

Search YouTube for "funk piano" and you'll find a bunch of tutorials.

I believe 'funk' is quite a broad genre. What period? Mid/late-60s funk sounds different to early/mid-60s funk. Also, assuming American funk, which part of the US?

If you listen to funk regularly, just sit down at the keys with some of your favourite tunes and try to work-out what's being played. wink

Cheers,
James

Go around your local area, look for a keyboardist who plays the style you like, ask him to teach you.

Okay, but please bear in mind that there are two keyboard players in that clip.
The guy on the Nord is playing a Hammond organ sound - he's a decent player, but his volume is a little low. The other keyboard player on the Yamaha is playing a Rhodes style sound. Both playing styles are rather different.

However, if you like this style of music, I would suggest looking towards the 90's acid-jazz scene for inspiration rather than 60s/70s funk.

Cheers,
James
