first of all sorry if there is some misunderstanding. English isnít my native language. The topic is about the right way of adjusting the touch curve of my piano for ViLabs new Ravenscroft.
I am using Yamaha Grantouch GT-2. When I bought it a few years ago, there was no better keyboard action or feel of a real piano and I was really satisfied with it for a long time.
Nevertheless, the sound became outdated more and more and so I decided now to buy my first additional software piano - the new Ravenscroft. I didnít have any problems in installation / sound card / latency stuff. Anything works fine and the sound is great.
But - I have to confess - I am lost now a bit in adjusting the keyboard with an appropriate touch curve for my GT2. I tried to do it in the following way (and would appreciate it if someone could correct me if my way of thinking is wrongÖ)
1 - One important factor is the Midi Input range of the keyboard. I wasnt able to produce a softer midi velocity than 7 and a harder one than 90. So, first of all, - the usable Keyboard velocity range from my keyboard is somewhere between 7 and 90.
2 - I must be able to generate any output between ppp and fff within this range. Since the software piano normally uses a wider range (the complete velocity scale from 1-127) to reach this I have to map (or better to compress) the output range 1-127 inside the real keyboard range (7-90).
3 - But as another factor the relation between Input velocity and audio output (loudness) seems not to be linear. Almost any software pianos allow to use something like bended curves here.
4 - I didnít want to guess and so I tried to get some data directly from the GT2. The idea is that Yamaha accurately calibrated this relation for their own samples. So I wrote a small program which played the usable keyboard range (7-90) and at the same time measured the loudness of the original GT2 samples at the line out of the piano. When I now take the results and extrapolate the Output Values inside a range from 1-127, a corresponding graph looks like this oneÖ
I transferred this data to the VelCurve settings inside the Ravenscroft an as a first attempt it feels well and playable. But I donít know what to do now with the other Velocity related settings (Threshold, Sens, Dynamics) and how they influence the above curve.
Maybe there are some hints for a better way of doing all this or a finetuning of the data? Thanks in advance your input and sorry again if I wasn t able to express my thoughts in a better way!
