I bought a Baldwin R Classic. It needed a lot of work, regulation, voicing. It sound like a cheap piano, which it was not supposed to be. Now, with all this arctic air, and even a room humidifier, the tuning pins are slipping. Did they change from their wonderful top grade pin block at that time, or can I rely on a good pin block if I repin this thing?

I think your piano has the high density, thin laminates, top face over a three-ply, quarter-sawn, maple lower part. I have never seen one of them crack or delaminate. Probably safe to go up a pin size or two.

Did you try the thinnest superglue? If it doesn't work I don't see any downside.

May be moot at this point, but there is a difference between a 1994 Baldwin R grand and a Baldwin Classic grand. The former was artist series and typically of good quality; latter was second tier, and not very good due to manufacturing shortcuts in materials and labor. Best wishes.

Baldwin R vs. Baldwin C1. There's more than just an inch difference.

The 1990s second tier Baldwin C1 Classic Grand 5'7" (below) is sometimes mistaken for the much better quality Baldwin R Artist Series Grand (5'8"). Though USA made, the C1 is inferior quality both in materials and workmanship, and was priced much lower than the R.

I have 3 Baldwin Classics of that same era that I service. I am convinced nothing you do to them will make them sound good. You can voice the factory hammers but will not be satisfied, you can put in new hammers and you will not be satisfied. They are a nightmare with the very best technicians. I would replace it ASAP if it were mine. Sorry to be so blunt.

Sad, but true. Both this model and its smaller cousin are a prime example of hurried manufacturing destroying a decent design. In this market I can think of one or two of each model that managed to escape the Conway factory in "okay" shape, but many did not. Dealers sent many back to the factory. Some of these showed up at the armory sales here only to be returned again. When these were discontinued, the Trumann plant took a shot at building a similar model under a different name altogether. The result was surprisingly better, but still somewhat lacking. The great experiment: building a quality USA made grand piano that could compete with low priced Asian grands failed. The company itself wasn't far behind.
