I have been away for a long time but I have come back. I have started taking piano lessons 6 months ago and am loving it.

I have decided I would like to play in your recitals so I am going to buy a digital recorder. I can't afford the zoom h4n. My teacher suggested the zoom h2n still a little expensive my brother has a Tascam dr-07mk11. I see most people have a zoom. Does anybody have a Tascam and how do you like it?

I have a Sony ICD-PX312 voice recorder plus a t-microphone and the set up is fine for my amateur purposes. I paid about $40 for a used Sony. Another $25 for the mic, years ago.

Just an observation, if your brother has a Tascam, why not borrow it and see for yourself? Wouldn't a first hand trial and the opinion of your brother both be about a hundred times better than the opinions of strangers?

Recording acoustic pianos can be a bit tricky because of mic placement.

Most of these devices are going to be fine for amateurs. For years, I used a much older Sony model with only 8 mb of memory. It was good enough for me for many years, and it still likely records better than I can play. Most phones being used, and most tablets are likely much better than my old Sony.

It might be a different story if a person is interested in competitions or auditioning for a school slot or job, but for the ABF recital I vote for come as you are, and/or get a basic low cost unit like I did. The recording quality isn't what is holding me back.

.

I second that opinion. That DR-07mkII is a pretty good recorder. Your brother might even be able to help. Since he has experience with it. The microphones are very sensitive. Opinions on gearslutz tend to side to the Tascam as a little better audio quality versus the Zoom's.
I have a DR-05. Haven't done too much with it. Enough to realize the microphones are extremely sensitive.
Bear in mind. I have always had a digital piano. Record it straight into the computer.

I forgot to mention that I have an upright piano
And my brother lives in another state. I am looking to spend $100-200.

I have used the Tascam DR-40. I really liked it. It has XLR / TRS balanced MIC/LINE inputs - a feature that many recorders (in this price range) do not have; a great feature for a digital piano, if you have one.

I have a Tascam DR-08 that I use to record my Charles Walter upright acoustic. I don't remember how much I paid for it. It's quite easy to use, and I put in a larger capacity SD card so I can record quite a lot of music. It goes through batteries pretty quickly, but to get around that, I usually plug it in to a USB-to-wall-socket converter, and just run it off of AC. Quality seems okay, although I sometimes think there's too much white noise in the recording.

You can listen to some recordings I've done with it here:

All the pieces from May 2010 and later were recorded with the Tascam DR-08.

I have the Blue Yeti. Very happy with it and cheap (well under $100.) All you need is your laptop and Audacity (free) and you're in business.

Google - "blue Yeti piano" and go through some of the videos on YouTube. Here's a couple: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJynDyEcHVo

    Very clean sound.
