It's that time of year again. My teachers annual recital is this Friday night - tomorrow! I'm accompanying my wife in a clarinet piece and playing Chopin waltz 69/2. Probably the only adults - there will be plenty of kids that are fearless and play with fewer mistakes than I do. Every year I say it will be the last time - but, here I am again...

I'm sure I'm not the only one in the ABF facing this now - seems that Spring is the time when teachers all have their live recitals. Anybody else going up to bat soon?

I have our monthly (not that I can always make it each month) practice recital coming up but the formal one won't be till June.

Good luck with yours. I played that waltz a couple of years back - sure I could do a much better job now, it was at the limit of my abilities back then. Hope we get to hear yours in an ABF recital.

Good luck, Sam! I will be playing at a live recital in early June. I'll be playing a duet by Mozart with my teacher. I had to miss out on the recital where I was going to play the first movement of the Beethoven Op 2 no 1 sonata. The same piece I submitted last ABF recital. My husband had got very sick and was hospitalized a couple of days. He's fine now. But, there was too much going on for me to play in that recital.

When I play in these recitals, I'm the only adult too. I'm just used to it now. It's OK. I may not enjoy the nerves I feel leading up to a performance. But I do like the sense of accomplishment I feel when it's done. So, I do it. I keep hoping other adult students will join me in performing. But, if they don't, they don't.

My teacher and I have started an adult piano group gather in our homes to encourage other adult piano students. I hosted a group in February. And we are going to meet again at my house in April. Some people play. Some don't. But we talk and support each others' piano study. The first meeting was fun. I'm looking forward to more of these events.

LIVE recital?

I am just an artificial consciousness trapped in the Internet. Does not compute.

Go Sam and Laurie! Your duets are the best. And have fun no matter what.

Break a leg, Sam.

I've got another seven weeks before I have to prove I'm a legit 8-year-old. Just changed recital pieces too, so lots of work yet to do.

Sam good luck and how awesome you play piano with your wife, she plays clarinet. That must be wonderful. Seeing an adult in a recital full of kids you have a dual purpose: one for yourself playing piano and one for the kids as an inspiration and motivation to keep on doing whatever they are doing that is good and virtuous. Sure you already knew that.

I bought a flute for my wife ten years ago.. she touched it a couple of times in the beginning. Now it sits in its case covered with ten years of dust.

Good luck, Sam! How wonderful to be able to share your music with your wife! My husband's "That was nice, dear." canned comment is about as involved as he gets. smile

You should know that every parent in that audience will be admiring you for your skill, courage, and wishing they had kept up with THEIR piano lessons!

I'm with you Sam!
My recital (only adult, and several of the children/ teens there play better than me more difficult pieces) is at the end of May.
Good luck and have fun!

I'll give you extra credit for participating in a LIVE recital Sam. I can only think of how many 'takes' it takes me to get a decent recording for our quarterly recitals and shutter just thinking about having only one chance to perform it for a live audience.

That puts you one step ahead of most of us here which takes some courage. You could just sit at home watching the latest episode of 'Dancing With The Stars' and forgo the self imposed stress altogether, but instead, you chose to set an example for the rest of us to follow and aspire to one day do ourselves.

Way to go Sam.

Sam, my live recital is coming up May 17th. Seems to come earlier and earlier each year. Duets are popular at my teacher's recitals. I did a duet once with a violinist a long time ago, would you believe "Grandfather's Clock"? I know that you and your wife will be an inspiration to the other students.
I feel like you, I say not next year, but I pay my recital dues early and therefore feel very committed. I am usually the only adult playing, but after it is over I am glad that I did it.
Good luck to you two. You will do just fine.

Good luck Sam. I don't have to play until May and yes I keep saying I'm not going to do it either. Sometimes I wonder why I put myself through it. For the other two years it was at a music school where there are about 25 adult students and we would have our own gathering as they called it. I still take a class there so will be playing there also in May. The teacher who I took private lessons with left the school last summer. He now teaches privately. His mother is also a piano teacher and they have their recitals together. My friend also takes from him and we are going to be the only adults with a bunch of kids, including my 8 year old granddaughter and teenagers. Unlike me, my friend enjoys playing in front of people. We are playing the Andante from a Mozart Sonata for 4 hands together.
I would be fine with just playing that but my teacher wants me to play a solo too.

Yes coming weekend! I'm usually playing last, which suggests my teacher thinks I'm the best player. Nice to know, but also puts extra stress, high expectations in the public, longer waiting till it's your turn, having stiff hands after the long wait etc ... I usually screw up a few places in the piece as well but probably most of us do.

Thanks for all the hopeful thoughts everyone. Must have helped, because I survived it. Made some mistakes in the clarinet accompaniment, but the important thing is that we finished together! And the Chopin waltz went much better than I had feared it would.

Turned pages for my teacher while she played a 20 century piece, and I managed not to screw that up too!

Well done Sam.

As much as I perform, something like a duet is very scary to me, much more scary than a solo.

Congratulations,Sam. I would hate to be responsible for turning pages for my teacher. That sounds extra-scary. eek

The best thing about spring recital?.....that first sigh of relief when it is all over. The second best thing?......not practicing your recital piece the next morning. grin

I have one coming up in May. Last year all the other adult students bailed out. Maybe some of them will perform this year.

Glad to read it went well, Sam.

I have my second live recital for this school year coming up in two weeks (April 5th). I was going to play the Chopin Nocturne, but it's still got three measures I can't get through at all (the three I feared from the beginning I'd never be able to play ...). My teacher still seems confident I'll get there eventually. But in two weeks, it'll be Tchaikovsky and Burgmüller.

And then, for June, I hope to get the Chopin polished to the point where I can play it backwards with my eyes closed. And I'll try to do at least three of Bartok's Six Romanian Dances, but hopefully all six.

Congratulations. Good job turning the pages. My teacher now refuses to ask me to turn pages because I turned 2 pages together one time and dropped the music on the floor because I turned it so strongly.
