As far as I can see, it's by Grünfeld, called Soiree de Vienne, subtitled Concert paraphrase on waltz themes from Die Fledermaus (by Johann Strauss). So the first is the title, the second is a description of what it is and what it's an arrangement of. Any clearer?

I heard Cohen play this as an encore at the Mannes IKIF quite a few years ago. It, and the entire regular part of the recital, were sensationally good. Anyone else hear Arnaldo Cohen in recital or recording?

One of the "amateur competition" contestants (Paul R.) played it (brilliantly!) in the Paris competition when he won it. I'd never known of this arrangement before, nor even heard of Grunfeld till then. This post made me curious as to which other major pianists might have played the piece, so I checked a little, and the most interesting thing I found was this, not because the playing is great (it isn't) but because it's amazing how quickly even something like this can start getting typical youtube kinds of comments and fights. The comments make reference to Lang Lang, so I checked for a recording of his, and found one. IMO it's awful, in the other direction from that other, and even when it isn't loud (and I'm even someone who usually sort of sticks up for Lang Lang).

I really enjoyed her interpretation of this piece.
I don't know why everyone has to be so critical on YouTube...it's often so unkind and unnecessary.
Worst for me are when children and amateur pianists post their videos and receive all sorts of criticism. "This will be great very soon" would do more to motivate and encourage people to continue with their practice.
Drives me insane.

But I agree with you about the unkind. Not to mention how some of them are going off on one another, and of course with the seemingly requisite youtube comment "vocabulary."

Boy, I don't know. I worked on this piece tonight. I was/am surprised it's not as difficult as it sounds.
But...I just finished listening to her again, as well as Grunfeld himself. He plays quite differently from the score, which surprised me (kind of).
I still don't mind her interpretation at all. I also listened to Lang Lang, and I didn't care for his nearly as much. (And apparently neither did several hundred people.)
May I ask of you: What don't you like about her interpretation? I am only curious.
Thank you.

Here is one of the best paraphrases you will ever hear on "Die Fledermaus" by none other than G. Cziffra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aP1y-F0md7QAnd, a score - to follow it with!

Quite so. But Godowsky's is unmatched.

Just curious about all of your "I agree" posts today. Previously, you took time to post considered responses. Did someone offend you, or are you just being deliberately dis-"agree"-able?

It's not just in Pianist Corner... it's like some 50 posts total across pianoworld, all from this morning, all saying the same kind of thing. Kind of creepy. -J
